Courtesy Posting: MARTINEZ, CA (N CAL)- ID #A1025452- CONTRA COSTA SHELTER- expected to be RESCUE ONLY - NEEDS CHOW SAVVY FOSTER OR HOME TOO- 'WINSTON'- 1.75 YR OLD MALE PUREBRED CHOW WHO WAS PEPPER SPRAYED IN FACE AND UNDERSTANDABLY SCARED AT INTAKE, BUT IS VERY SWEET ONCE HE FEELS SAFE. SEE GREAT VIDEOS OF HIM BEING LOVING. X URGENT -SHELTER ALREADY ASKING FOR RESCUE 11/14 AND HE WILL NOT GET LONG AT THIS FULL KILL SHELTER- NEEDS A CHOW SAVVY HOME OR FOSTER AND RESCUE TO SAVE- YOUNG CHOW BOY FOUND DUMPED IN NEGLECTED CONDITION, ONLY 45 LBS- INITIALLY SCARED BUT IS ALREADY TAKING TREATS GENTLY AT RISK TO BE EUTHANIZED SOON AT CONTRA COSTA COUNTY. We are in urgent need of finding a chow savvy home and or foster and rescue for this poor younger purebred looking chow boy who was dumped with very matted fur and underweight. According to the shelter who reached out to us, this poor dog 'has been known to be running free for a little while. He came in as a stray on 11/12/24 and will come off his stray hold on 11/16/24. He is not doing well here, and we would like to get him out as soon as possible.' We are calling this adorable but neglected boy, Winston. He was found at a school. Animal control was called out and sadly used pepper spray to apparently catch him, spraying it on his face! As one can imagine, this poor dog was understandably scared upon intake and still is, but began warming up substantially. The shelter emailed us 11/15, 'We put a treat bucket out for him and yesterday I was able to sit and offer him treats which he took softly.' On 11/16, they emailed us, 'He's a little head shy with the leash but walked like a gentleman on the leash.' Following this, we sent a volunteer 11/16 who found him to warm up even more, and provided nice video with people. And other dogs. The volunteer said, 'He's really sweet. He has met two dogs and not reacted at all. Got some video with other dogs. He is completely calm around them. He is calm and sweet. He immediately greeted us. He sat for his treats and was really affectionate with Jesse. He was kind of interested in another dog but in a playful way and lost interest quickly and went back to Jesse for more attention. He is very thin and his coat is a mess. But he seems incredibly people-oriented and shows no fear or aggression at all.' However, at a very full shelter, time is not on his side. Winston comes off his stray hold 11/16 and is may be made Rescue only, and then added to the euth list very soon. We are unclear will if they will release him to a chows savvy adopter and requested a re-evaluation already. At a minimum, we need a savvy foster or home and or a rescue. Most rescues need a foster to save. If you are interested in fostering, fostering-to-adopt, or helping Winston in some other way (ie., visiting him, pledging for his medical or rescue, transport, etc), please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, and can try to pair fosters or interested parties with a willing rescue group. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly by calling (925) 608-8400 and providing ID, as well as emailing the rescue coordinator Shelly at [email protected] . If you want to adopt, please contact us to see if we can get approval from the shelter.
