Finlay is an approximately seven to eight year old Maltese. He has not had an easy life, but he has had plenty of sunny days in my care and will have many more to come in the perfect home. Please note that this rehoming situation is something that I do not take lightly. I have worked with Finlay for over a year now after he was abandoned in my care while fostering him for a local rescue. I love him very much, and he and I have formed a strong bond. Despite his rough start in life as a puppy mill dog, he has made fantastic strides socially and emotionally. He now acts like a dog and pals around with my resident dogs, a German Shepherd, a Golden Retriever, and a Pit Bull/Staffie mix. He has been exposed to cats, and while he is still fearful of them, he is still making progress with their presence. As much as I love him and am enthused by the immense progress he has made (please ask for more details on his past in a message), I just feel like he would thrive best in a home with more puppy mill dog rehabilitation experience. He has made great strides in potty training and does go outside to potty on a harness and leash but will still have accidents. Something that will never be fully remedied, is that he barks a lot when something upsets him. For instance, if someone pulls into the property, he will bark for up to a couple of hours after the event, even if no one comes in and the other dogs stop barking. I have done my best to assure him, and redirect with more desirable behaviors, but it is still a struggle. He also is getting a bit overly assertive with my Pit Bull mix and German Shepherd, and while they do not react and just flee, I know this distresses them. Fortunately, he and my Golden get along splendidly! I believe that Finlay would thrive in a home with another dog or two, but perhaps maybe toy or non-sporting breeds, or larger breeds that tolerate the antics of smaller breeds. Finlay will need updated vaccines, dental work, and a heart murmur medication prescribed, as my vet will not treat him since he was not formally adopted. Fortunately, the murmur is very mild, and he eats without issue. Really, I just want to ensure that Finlay has a person that will love him as much as I do. There is no rush to rehome him, as I want to ensure that he goes to the best home possible. He is loved and cared for, and I want his future home to do the same. A fee is being asked for to ensure that he will go to a home that wants him and loves him, and it will go towards other animals in need.
