This owner reached out to me with his heart-tugging story when we all hope our pets can be taken care of as we approach our senior years. This couple love dearly and provide for their dog and wants to see her off to a good life. He will get her to the vet and get her vaccinations done and HW tested in the next 2 weeks. The expense part of owning her is not his issue, it is their ability to continue to care and provide the best life for her going forward and it breaks their heart but want to do right by here and find her a loving family without going to pound, as they know that is not in her best welfare. Here is what I know: My wife and I have a two-year-old Australian cattle dog (Reba). We are very pleased with her, during the summer she kept the deer out of our vegetable garden. But now we have a dilemma. We have decided to move into a two BR cottage at a Senior Community and ReBa will not be able to move with us. Furthermore, there is no open space for her to roam on. From the beginning of this week I have attempted to find a home for her with one of the SPCA Pounds, to no avail. Reba is as healthy as can be, has all the required shots, etc. Since we had no interest in breeding her, we did not look for any papers from the (backyard) breeder. We had her fixed and she has received all required shots from the vet but will be due for shots soon, but he will pay for her next vetting. We are located in Fairfield, PA, which is a suburb of Gettysburg, PA. She has always been fed and taken for long walks, but I will be 82 next year, my wife is right behind me in her late 70s and all we are wishing for now is to find her a new owner with a golden heart because we dearly love her! She lives outside most of the year, (this is a common PA practice and especially for this age of owner, this is just how they do it) and comes in during the winter. She is housetrained and is good in a crate but she does love to be outside as much as possible. She is offleashable and has recall skills. Last vet visit (year ago) she was HW- however she is not on preventative but will be retested in next few weeks and will get her UTD on vaccinations. She is GREAT with adults and kids!!! (9 yo tested and she loves them to death!) Likely will not do well with cats (he doesn't have any) as she is not ok with squirrels and groundhogs. No direct day-to-day dog experiences to talk about, but met with a male GSD dog from next door and did fine on meet/greet and is fine seeing them at the vet. Everyone loves her at the vet and she does ok riding in the car, (looks out windows, sits down) but does experience some car sickness.
