***NEEDS FOSTER or FOREVER HOME*** Currently in Boise boarding kennels, ID Meet ASHE! Gorgeous ASHE is a typical active 2-year-old, 50-lb neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped boy who could be your next furry family member. Volunteers are currently working with ASHE with day-fostering or 'doggy boot camp'. This is what we've learned after over the past 3 weeks (115 hours). ASHE is smart and learns quickly. Fortunately, he is extremely treat-motivated so easy to teach him new behaviors. He knows 'sit' (before opening doors) and 'look at me' (for a treat). He will wait while watching treat in palm of hand (impulse control) and will take when given the command 'OK'. He knows 'kennel up' and is good in his crate even when no one is around. He loves getting treats out of a Kong toy and enjoys chewing it when basking outdoors in the sun with his person. He is house-trained and crate-trained and rides well in vehicles. He did well off-leash in a large enclosed area; he just wanted to be by your side while you walked. He was fine walking on the greenbelt with strangers, dogs, bikes, skaters. He seems to want to go into the river, so he may be a water dog. We will be bringing him to an indoor pool soon to test him. We learned that ASHE knows how to play fetch with a tennis ball, and we always make sure that he sits before we throw. ASHE did well with side-by-side walks with another balanced pit bull female. ASHE was well-behaved recently at a dog fair that had lots of commotion, strangers, kids, and dogs (see videos). He did react badly (i.e., lunged towards) to a black dog that he saw maybe 12 feet away, so he may be dog-selective? ASHE has never reacted to barking dogs in yards at his boarding kennel, so we recently walked him by several small and large dogs barking and running fences in their own yards while we walked along a neighborhood path. ASHE never reacted to any of the dogs barking! ASHE is not a picky eater...he loves EVERYTHING and is grateful for all new experiences. He enjoyed a walk through Petco, but best not to walk down the rodent aisle. Unfortunately, with everything that ASHE has been through and the past 3 months in boarding kennels, including 2 months without much enrichment or training, he still has episodes where he shows some stress or maybe need for attention? He will sometimes amp himself up and will pounce on his people. He reacted badly towards other dogs (2 black dogs) during his stay at the kennels and, although he has a gentle mouth when taking treats, we don't yet trust him with small kids (toppling/running into). He will need an experienced owner/leader to instill a routine in a new home and help him to show his true calm, loving self. For now, we are looking for a quiet home with one or two adults without kids, other dogs, or a lot of traffic. Because he never had any structure in his life, ASHE needs lots of routine and reinforcement of the good behaviors that he has learned recently. APPLICATION: https://forms.gle/U3UUbdpNzZVpxP9h8 BACKGROUND: ASHE lived on the streets in CA with a homeless person with alcohol issues for his entire short life. A Good Samaritan/animal rescue volunteer who saw him often came across him in bad shape with his owner intoxicated and passed out. She felt compelled to get ASHE out of the situation and the homeless person relinquished ownership. In early August, ASHE was transported to Boise for an adopter, but they changed their mind and ASHE was placed temporarily in a Boise boarding kennel. He got kennel cough and went downhill quickly, to the point the facility didn't think he was going to make it. Volunteers with Idaho Mastiff Rescue stepped in and took him to an emergency vet. He has made a miraculous recovery and we've gotten to witness his sweet demeanor.
