Toby's known background: I adopted Toby in Feb.2024 from a local city shelter. His reported age was 1 year old at the time and had been in shelters for 3 months and was recorded as a stray at intake. He received most shots and was neutered before adoption. He was rib-showing thin and his fur was like a stiff bottle brush. He had the sweetest temperament I have seen in a dog! He has come a long way: he received excellent vet care, receiving a few additional immunizations, was started on Omega3 for his coat (total transformation!), put him on a good dog food in a slow feed dish (eats fast and still scavenges on walks - working on 'leave it' command, usually successful with a training treat). He potty trained quickly, has learned sit, heal, watch me, and is working hard, but making progress on quiet. Stay command? Keep reading! He has made good progress in greeting many small dogs but still struggles with most larger than him, especially off leash and running. He loves daily leash walks, and sniffing and replying to peemails is his thing :) He has a back right knee subluxation and a joint supplement has not improved it. The vet says he is fine but it may require surgical care someday. He hasn't met a person he doesn't love! He is playful, yet gentle; loves children who are taught to be gentle (but is little and can wear out) and can happily rest by your side for hours. He will shadow you around the house. However, he also has severe separation anxiety. Currently he has made small (but significant improvements) in my being able to step out for short (10 min.) periods and still be able to stay calm. Training focus has been with the emphasis on keeping him below the anxiety threshold. This is the most important factor for consideration in adopting him. He will need people home (or sitter to come in) as you continue training in this. He is a companion dog by breed, so while behavioral training will help, he will need to have a family able to have plenty of time with him.
