About Kong

Kong is a 79lbs male Shepard who is going to take a very committed adopter. Kong has been at the Vinton County Shelter since February of 2024 and has had no luck finding a responsible person to adopt him. Kong does not fully trust humans, once you gain his trust, he is a very happy and loyal dog. We believe that Kong once had a home, but maybe not a good one, he might have been abused. However, he seems to be house broken and knows some basic commands. Kong is very food and toy motivated and loves to be brushed. He is a bit demanding at times and needs someone with a strong but gentle approach. He is a huge sweetheart once he gets to know you, but he also knows his boundaries. He has never bitten us wardens, but it is possible that he would bite if feeling threatened by a stranger. So, we ask that whoever wants to adopt Kong, comes in a few times to gain his trust before taking him home. He seems to be good with other dogs but would be best suited to a one dog home as he will take work and time to train. He really is a fantastic dog; he just needs to learn trust again. His size makes it hard to find someone willing to give him that shot. Kong's adoption is currently free, this includes his 5in1 and kennel cough vaccines, microchip, and we are offering to pay for his neuter (we believe this will help with some of his dominant behaviors). If anyone can refer Kong to a rescue or person who is comfortable with the work Kong needs, please send them our way. We are worried that spending much more time here at the shelter is going to be too hard on Kong and we do not want it to come to euthanasia. He deserves a chance, and we hope we will find it here.
