About Julius Caesar

Saint Bernard mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Julius Caesar, just coming on 4 years old, male, neutered, St Bernard mix, possibly Smooth Coat Collie, or Great Pyrenees. He's roughly 90lbs, not overweight, very healthy. He's up on all his vaccinations and the only meds he's on are a monthly heartworm tablet and a common flea and tick topical treatment. We got him at around 6 months old. He was a rescue and had been found living under a shipping container near a truck stop. He loves dogs but I can't say how he would be around children as we don't have any in our family or family of friends. He is fine with cats and leaves them alone. He does well on leash and with baths. He is generally a very good boy. He doesn't tear up things or dig and is house trained and does fine in a crate if it is ever needed. Despite some of his trust issues with adult strangers, he is very much a dog's dog. One of his greatest loves was going to daycare to play. Before our daycare closed, we had him in daycare anywhere from 2-4 days a week while we were working. He'd go in first thing and play and then, as a lot of big dogs do, he'd get tuckered out and sit back with the attendants and watch the pack. When new ones came, he'd often greet them and encourage them to play. He is very sweet-tempered when he feels safe and comfortable. He knows a few commands but also has a little bit of a stubborn streak, not because he doesn't know the command, but more like 'that's no fun for me right now, I don't really want to do it', but then he eventually does it. He's extremely routine-oriented. It only takes a couple of days for him to establish a routine. He's practically an alarm clock and feels the need to remind us of whatever the routine is. An example is when there is a certain time of day he'd get a biscuit. He'd remind us of course, and even if he didn't really want to eat it right then, it was important that we did our job at the right time and got him a biscuit! He's vocal occasionally, not barking, but more of a rawr, rawr, rawr sound when we're not paying attention. I had just started teaching him to use buttons to talk before we made this decision and he was starting to get the hang of the concept. The easiest one to use was 'treat'. He loves riding in the car and will go at every invitation. He also loves the cool mornings. We live on 1.3 acres, and he loves to lay in front of the screen door in the early morning and listen to the birdsong. He'll remind us it's time to have the front door open. In the late afternoon/early evenings, he loves nothing better than to be outside in the backyard with us while we sit and enjoy the cooler temps of the day. He'll do a bit of sniffing around and then come and lounge until it's time to go back inside. He loves mid-day naps too, especially if we somehow find the time to nap with him. He loves his squeaky stuffies and never tears them up. Some, he's had since we got him. He's really good with baths but can be hard to move sometimes because he spreads his toes out and seems to stick to the floor like a barnacle. His favorite part of bath time is to rub his face in his towels while we wrestle. He does well being brushed but what he likes better is being vacuumed! We have one of those tools that you attach to a vacuum and he is happy to sit there for however long you need, the longer the better, and he loves kisses on his face. He was a pandemic puppy that bonded during lockdown. As a result, he guards his home and family well. He came from an adult home with no kids so compatibility with kids is unknown. He really is a beautiful boy inside and out, who just needs a family that will love him and give him time to feel safe and comfortable.
