Caspian is a fixed male 11 yr old cattle dog mix. He is up to date on all vaccines, and has no major health issues. We need to rehome him as we can no longer give him the attention he deserves due to a job change and new baby. We need him adopted by October 26th 2024; he will at that time go to an animal shelter. Like most heelers, Caspian is a shadow dog, becoming intensely devoted to one human companion, and is often wary of strangers. He is energetic, loyal, and intelligent. He loves running and hiking but has started slowing down in his later years, preferring to lounge in his bed most of the day. He still very much enjoys fetch, frisbee and a daily walk. He is well trained, and not destructive; he will only chew on toys or balls he has been given. He loves getting his bark box, and will happily open it himself if commanded. He is house broken, having been an indoor dog his whole life, and will let you know if he needs to go out by standing near the door. He knows many commands, and walks well on a leash. He loves car rides! He does not resource guard with food or toys; however he is protective of his bed or crate, preferring to have a place of his own to decompress when feeling stressed. He will jump into the tub for a bath on command. Caspian would do well with older adults who will be firm and patient with him, and understand his wariness of strangers inside his home. He does well outside the home meeting people and other dogs on hiking trails and at the dog park (no leash reactivity, decent recall off leash). He is however extremely protective of his home, leading to anxiety and aggression when new people enter. He has never been aggressive to the point of biting, however he will bark loudly and often growl when approached by unknown people in his house. He does not do well with small children. He enjoys the company of, and playing with, other dogs. Caspian would do very well in a home with a medium/larger submissive dog companion. He is indifferent to cats, however he could be prone to herd, as he enjoys chasing the rabbits and squirrels in his yard. He has met larger livestock animals and has done well. Caspian is looking for his next chapter with someone who has the time to devote to his quirks and energy, a firm and kind attitude, and has a good understanding of the patience it takes to bond with a stubborn heeler. He will be a faithful and devoted companion. Please make a donation to RescueMe in lieu of a rehoming fee.
