About Odin

Great Pyrenees / Lab
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Odin is a multi-talented dog well loved by his family. We adopted him 7 years ago as an unwanted puppy from a purebred pyrenees and a labrador mix, he has classic pyr temperament in a slightly smaller (90lb) package. He's grown up with children, cats, and chickens and enjoys playing with other dogs, but since a long painful recovery from double CCL repairs he has become somewhat defensive and reactive to certain specific triggers and we can no longer trust him in a home with cats and young children. He's an excellent livestock guardian (loves his horses, takes his daytime chicken guarding seriously and is excellent at chasing off hawks, we have not lost one free range chicken since we got him despite him not being outside full time), is a very laid back fella who loves to play ball, fetch, and tug rope but is just as happy laying on your lap or the yard watching his property. He is not destructive, can be left out in the house without anxiety separation, has never been a jumper, and stays close to home. He is handsome, sweet, and affectionate without being clingy. Despite the knee surgeries he gets around and runs very well and is able to function well without limping or pain most days. Most of the time there are no issues with his behavior, but he is protective over dropped food and small prey and is not okay with being physically pushed (even lightly) or picked up. Since we have cats who catch mice in the house and kids who might occasionally bump into him or trip over him the situation is unsafe. He works well with adults once he comes to trust them, is NOT a bite risk with strangers (he only barks, then runs if they approach him), allows nail trims and baths and even difficult or painful vet care, and is generally shy with strangers but very friendly to children as he was heavily socialized as a puppy. The only issues we've had have been at home with people trying to take something he's protecting, there have never been any issues outside the home. He's not especially smart about cars as he lives on a farm without much exposure, so he will need a setting back from the road or a fence. I will only send him with someone who does not use physical discipline with their dogs, has no children or cats, and is willing to meet with him at least a few times so he becomes comfortable with you. You should have familiarity with reactive dogs or guardian breeds. We love him very much and have invested a lot of time, care, training, and physical therapy in him. I am only rehoming him to prevent a situation where we will be forced to euthanize him if someone is injured.
