About Samwise Gamgee

Adoption Fee: $250
Golden Retriever
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Sam is 21 months old, potty trained, house trained, crates well, food motivated, indifferent to cats, loves everyone he meets out and about, loves and plays well with other dogs, rides in car in a crate, walks fairly well on leash. He is a large golden 115 lbs and is healthy. He resource guards his food so he eats his meals in his crate. He has attended puppy obedience classes. He's been socialized: been to farmer's markets, extended drives, campouts, doggy daycare, park concerts, hikes, dog parks, stores, overnight pet hotels. He's not had any problems in these places. He's friendly, no bad habits and plays well. Commands he knows: sit, lay down, off counter, come, find your spot, find it, drop it, leave it, fetch. You'll be a good match if you: have had other dogs before, don't have kids, are active and take him out to play or walk regularly, have a backyard and med-large house. Sam is playful and a goof ball. He'll play fetch and go on runs, though he's not a long range runner yet. He won't eat your house or your stuff, though he will steal socks to be silly. He loves adventure and following Dad around to do 'work.' The major problem we are experiencing is that our house is closer quarters and Sam is reactive to the kids, and occasionally to Mom too inside the house (not outside). He's not this way all the time, but enough that we don't recommend a family with kids for Sam. Sam had a recent unfortunate incident where he bit my 11 yr old son. My son was on the sofa watching a show and Sam was sitting at the foot of the sofa where my son was. Sam growled, and there didn't seem to be an obvious reason why. My son told the dog, 'Sam, no.' Sam responded by biting his hand. It did bleed and no stitches were needed. We think maybe Sam growled because he likes the spot on the sofa where my son was sitting. Maybe he wanted Sawyer to move? It should be noted, he hasn't shown any reactivity toward children visiting our house or outside our house. We've consulted dog behaviorists and trainers and applied their advice. Unfortunately it seems like we're a bad fit for Sam. A new home and clean slate with experienced owners is what he needs. Our contact info has been updated so emails will be sent to an email that is checked more regularly, and phone number has been added as well for TEXTS ONLY please. In your initial inquiry of Sam, please answer the following questions: 1. Did you read this entire ad? 2. Do you have experience with large dogs? 3. Do you have kids in home? 4. Do you have large-med sized home? 5. What's your plan to exercise him? (Big yard? Are you active? Hikes? Dog daycare? Etc) 6. Your questions. We will reply in 1-2 days. If you don't get a response, feel free to reach out again. In our response we'll include more pics of Sam, and a couple dates to meet him, probably within a week of that response. At that meetup if everything looks good, we will send him home that day with his new family with a bunch of supplies to help him make a good start, and his purebred papers and paperwork to formally transfer ownership to you. Thanks for your interest in Sam!
