Meet Mooch (or Moochie), our 2-year-old Dachshund Mix weighing 23 lbs. He's a true cuddle bug indoors -- affectionate and playful, Moochie loves nothing more than snuggling. Inside he's the perfect dog. He's crate, muzzle and potty trained. Where Mooch struggles is outside interacting with other dogs and strangers. We live in an apartment in Brooklyn and we feel at this point that the city is just too much for him. He's highly reactive to dogs and wary of strangers, and we've made little headway with Mooch's behavior around dogs after 1.5 years of working with an animal behaviorist on training and a veterinary behaviorist on medication. While Mooch sometimes reacts to adults on the street, he warms up to family and friends with some positive reinforcement indoors. We have not had Mooch around small children - he's reactive to them outside. While it breaks our hearts to think about rehoming Mooch, we also believe he deserves a calm, dog-free environment where he can flourish.
