About Ollie

Treeing Walker Coonhound
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

I just adopted this boy a few months back. He's a pretty energetic dog that is struggling to fit in with my family. I have a brother that lives with me who was in a really bad car accident a couple years ago that left him with permanent disabilities. I have to leave my dog at home during the day when I go to work and my brother is having a hard time with his energy, making Ollie not be able to get better. I'm trying to work through Ollie's behaviors but I can't with my brother around. Ollie is a hound so naturally he barks a lot, which creates a lot of stress on my brother. Ollies barking is not obsessive though, so to me it's not really overwhelming. I run him every single morning for about 30-40 minutes and he has lots of toys in the backyard to run and play with but this still doesn't appear to be enough stimulation and exercise for him. He is leash reactive with people while out on our runs. I cannot take him to public places because of this so I will run at 5 am before my neighbors are out. My husband can easily take him out in public though. My husband can take him anywhere but he's a truck driver and rarely home. Ollie will also go after cats and squirrels, or seemingly any prey. He had some significant food issues when I got him but we've mostly got that under control. He wasn't aggressive or anything but would really assertively try to get your food while eating. Again, that's much better! I just don't have the ability to get all of his energy out and he's really challenging my brothers mental health that I've worked so hard to get better. I'm so sad for Ollie. He has the potential to be a great dog. Hes crate trained, very affectionate, and good with kids and other dogs with proper introductions. I have a 2 year old niece that comes over and he's great with her. He will however take her food if she's eating so I keep them separated during meal times for her and him. He likes napping and getting a good cuddle. He is also very intelligent!
