About Jor

Adoption Fee: $0
Siberian Husky mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Jor is an approximately 2-year-old Alaskan Husky (Embark test results pending) who we adopted through the Dane County Humane Society in June, 2023. We adopted him with the intention of rehoming after allowing him the time, structure and stability to decompress and allow calmer emotions help guide his behavior. Fostering him at that time was not an option given a complicated human backstory. I will forever be grateful this dog was not euthanized due to human factors. He has flourished and is an absolutely amazing dog. He is an amazingly resilient dog. He travels well in a car, has quietly and happily traveled on longer day & weekend trips, has camped and has stayed overnight in hotels and friends' houses while crated. He currently sleeps in a 5x5 kennel that is in our basement. We do not allow him to free roam in the house because we also have indoor cats and we have many house remodeling projects going on. I am confident that he would eventually have the skillset to do this, if the humans and other animals in the house also felt comfortable with this. Jor has participated in two canicross races sponsored by the Wisconsin Trailblazers. He even won some cash at his first race! He is exceedingly capable at negotiating events where there are multiple dogs; he also has attended small-group, in-home daycare with the Madison Dogmas and he goes to the large, natural-landscaped dog parks where he runs and runs. All his training has been individual and games-based. No luring has been used in his training. A lot of value has been built for places like dog beds, crates, and the 'reinforcement zone' at a person's side. He has always been encouraged to pull when wearing his canicross harness. He is a natural and even pulled our Christmas tree out of the woods! Jor is a strong boy, partly because we also do functional fitness games (stair climbing, crawling, etc.) with him. He will soon be old enough to start training to skijor and bikejor. My hope is that he finds his lifetime home with outdoor enthusiasts who might be looking to add a young adult dog to their family mix. When we are out and about, many people stop and ask if they can pet Jor. Jor never really stops and asks humans to pet him. If you are someday in his inner circle of trusted humans, then Jor is a snuggler; I have been able to massage and handle him while he has any sort of food or resource in his mouth. This calmness and trust, however, does not currently extend to anyone and everyone when we are in public and so, when people want to pet Jor, we harness that enthusiasm instead as a training opportunity: Jor and other people practice a 'collar grab game' in which Jor gets a treat after someone touches his collar. He is an A+ student at this game (which then plays into more advanced 'recall' games). Anyone who adopts Jor will also be gifted: A subscription to his Susan Garrett Recallers training (good for 1 year, and renewable for subsequent years). The ebook 'Control Unleashed' which lays out Pattern Games in great detail. A canicross/hiking harness, a long line, and a human canicross harness from Non-stop Dogwear. I am very open to arranging rehoming as a process in which the permanent home, myself and Jor work together towards a smooth and stable transition - if that is welcomed or desired.
