About Groot

Groot is an active and loving purebred German Shephard Beagle mix. We only discovered his purebred status after having his DNA completed by the veterinarian. Groot is 5 years old and has been in our home since he was approximately 6 months old. Groot came to us from a home that was not the greatest *and* after escaping the local pound by breaking out of his outdoor enclosure. Groot loves cats! He gets on well with other dogs after proper introductions have been made in an environment where he feels safe. He does have some insecurities and as such will require an experienced adopter who works with him on socialization when in public spaces. Groot does display food aggression with animals of similar size to his. Unfortunately, he came to us with this behavior ingrained. Our solution is to feed him separately from our other pets and there have been no problems in the five years we have had him. Groot loves kids and would make an excellent family dog. He responds to several commands, is house-trained and loves to be outdoors. He is however a fully trained 'inside the house' dog. He is afraid of the dark and should be kept inside at night. He loves to trail and hunt a scent so if you plan on keeping him outside during part of the day, you will need a proper fence and tracking collar. The decision to rehome Groot is not an easy one or one I want to make. Unfortunately, I have been fighting cancer for five years and at this time, I have no local support outside of my elderly parents. I previouly sought to rehome but my cancer situation stabilized and out of concern for my daughter, I took the listing down. This dog belongs to my (now) adult daughter but she has adopted a puppy this last year and is no longer interested in Groot. I have maintained his vet care as well as trained him for the entirety of the time she has had him. I am looking for a home in order to ensure that Groot is taken care of when I am no longer able to do so as the cancer continues to grow.
