Moose is a very special boy. He is 3/4 Saint Bernard and 1/4 poodle. He's 5 years old and about 90 pounds. He is incredibly loving and loyal to his 'pack' and sees it as his job to keep tabs on everyone and keep us safe. He's very intelligent and loves training. He does best with mental stimulation and is treat/praise motivated. He knows the following commands: sit, down, up, roll over, touch, shake, high five, stay, come, fetch, place. (Though he has selective hearing with the words 'stay' and 'come' when he feels he has something very important to do like bark at the mailman.) Moose lives with a male pug and a male cat. He and the pug are the very best of friends and spend their days rough-housing and snuggling. The pug is the alpha in our home. Moose has learned to not chase the cat, but needs reminders when the cat surprises him. We once had lionhead bunnies and he also learned to be quiet and not go near them. Because Moose is so protective, he has some challenges on a leash. He LOVES walks, but he is very reactive when he sees another dog. He is very large and strong, so it can be challenging to manage him. With the right family and a good collar/leash, he can go on neighborhood walks. He must have a fenced yard, and would do best with a very large yard or land. He worked extensively with a fabulous trainer outside Olympia who would love to continue working with him. The trainer helped us see the root of Moose's reactivity is fear/anxiety and his protector nature. Moose is very hyper when new people enter our home and makes sure to let them know he is the bodyguard! But he will settle down and enjoy pets and attention once he knows we're all safe. He hasn't spent time around children, but he has been with our 7 month daughter since birth. He is not very interested in her most of the time but he is gentle when they interact. He has growled at her a couple times when she pulled his ears hard. We're devastated at the thought of rehoming our boy Moose. But, we are both full-time working parents with an infant and he is not getting the attention he needs, wants, and deserves. We hope to find Moose a home with lots of space and owner(s) with more time.
