About Trixie

Adoption Fee: $250
Border Collie / Whippet
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Meet Trixie! Trixie is roughly 1 year old and is a sweet little love bug with her people. She craves attention, affection, and wants a friend to play with. This cutie patootie is very smart, energetic and athletic! Border Collie, Whippet and Shepherd is the likely mix and she will probably grow no larger than 40 lbs full grown. Currently, she is less than 35 lbs. She is eager to please, has learned some simple commands and is doing well on leash. She is also good at alert barking. A mix of intelligent working breeds, she will need mental stimulation and an outlet for her energy (safe, outdoor space with room to play). Trixie would do best with a friend to spend her day with - either an active person or another confident canine buddy. She enjoys digging, playing with ropes, chewing toys and is a jumper! (We are working on this!) She can jump up onto things easily, so a high kennel or yard fence is necessary in an enclosure setting. Trixie was housed temporarily in a shelter and became very anxious and depressed in that setting. She has since been worked with and has made great improvements! When meeting new people and pets, she needs to be in a quieter place with a 360 degree view. Although she has no problem entering crates, once inside she gets anxious - especially travel crates (the enclosed kind with a wire panel door) - however, not with her fosters, only with other people and animals. She will bark at them and when really fearful, she will growl. This is a fear-reactive response, NOT an aggression issue. However, it is still something that is being worked on and will need monitored. We have every reason to believe she will improve 100% in time, with continued training, as this was a non-issue prior to the shelter setting. We've also learned she does much better with non-enclosed wire crates (that provide her with a 360 degree view). Her fosters have zero issues with either style, as she trusts them and feels safe! But it takes awhile for her to trust others while in crated situations. Outside of being crated, Trixie warms up fairly quickly to most people. She is used to sleeping indoors at night - in either style crate and has never had an accident. She absolutely adores her foster family, including the kids. She has only been around older kids, not small children. She is quick to roll over and give her belly access for a good rub and loves to cuddle in your lap. She is treat-motivated but gentle mouthed. As for other pets, you will need to do slow introductions in a non-crated area. An area where she has space to retreat is best. Confident, non-reactive dogs would also be best. Fearful or overly dominant dogs would not be a good match. She has been around indoor cats. Inside a crate, she initially would bark at them, but has now learned that they aren't so scary. When she is outside of the crate and on leash, she will belly crawl to them with tail wagging and pure curiosity. With time and safety precautions for kitties in place, she may just make a great feline companion! Please, only apply if you can give Trixie a fur-ever home. If you are interested in adopting, you must fill out an application first. You can go to www.LAFPOGCW.org to complete one, or message us here and we will email you a copy.
