*** PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE PROFILE DESCRIPTION *** Video 1: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cnT1ZLX0k3Q Video 2: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/h--5h0Rr4Uo Elvis is a great dog for the right home. He needs someone who has previous heeler experience and understands the very distinct traits of a heeler and that herding/protecting is not the same as being aggressive. Elvis is a heeler through and through so it is very important that his adopter understands the breed. He will make the best companion for someone who is looking for these traits. Elvis walks right next to you and if he runs off to sniff something, he comes right back and walks next to you again. He also walks really well on the leash. He does great with other dogs and has absolutely no issues with cats (he completely ignores them) but needs his space so he would not do well in a small space. He will not tolerate a dog getting in his face, like a puppy wanting to play and jumping into his face. He will give several warning growls and then a warning snap if it doesn't stop. But he absolutely enjoys walks with other dogs and hasn't had any issues being out in the yard with everyone and even eating out of the same (large) bowl with others. He basically ignores other dogs and enjoys it when they do the same. His crate is his safe space and he goes straight into it. At first I thought he was terrible in a crate because he was whining like crazy but then I moved him to an extra large crate and he loves that. It's his den. So he just needs an extra large crate which is larger than what you would normally get for a dog his size. He needs his own space and would not do well in a small home where he would be couped up close with other dogs. He wants to go right into his crate after being outside and also enjoys being fed in there. When you open the crate, he goes straight to the door and does his business outside. He does not run off and can be left in the yard unattended. He comes right back to the door when he is done with his business and sits by the door until you let him back inside. He will also whimper if he's in the crate and needs to go so he is fully potty trained and never had an accident inside since I got him. He enjoys walks and would be able to go on hikes, etc with no problem but he doesn't need extensive exercise in order to be mellow. He loves sleeping in his crate on a soft blanket and he also loves getting pets and kisses. He is very submissive with humans and it is clear that he sees you as his superior. He will herd other dogs if there is a commotion. Two specific examples I witnessed: we were out in the yard and called a group of dogs to come to me while Elvis was standing right next to me. As they ran towards me, Elvis perceived it as a threat and blocked them. He did not fight, he merely got them to disperse and not 'get to me'. A second time, I had two younger dogs playing and it was getting a little rowdy so I went to break it up and Elvis jumped in to help. Again, he only acted until what he perceived as a threating situation was diffused. He is not aggressive, he is protective and he is a herding dog. He is a wonderful companion who is very well trained but he is not a dog park dog due to the unpredictability of the other dogs' actions and people often not having great recall of their dogs to keep them from getting into his face. However, he would do wonderfully on a hike or walk, because he would stay right with you and not bother other dogs. Elvis was left behind when his previous owners moved in a small town in Oklahoma. The animal control officer spent weeks trying to gain his trust so he would come to her as he simply sat at the property he was left behind at. He deserves to find a loving home that will appreciate his wonderful qualities and will be willing to ensure his heeler traits described above are taken into account in activities and home arrangements. He is currently still in Oklahoma but can only be adopted out of state where people treat animals well. He has to be prepaid and picked up directly from transport at one of our drop off locations below. If things don't work out for some reason, which rarely ever happens, we will either find a local foster to take him in or he will go back to Oklahoma on the next transport until a new home is found. www.facebook.com/desideratarescue/reviews Transport locations: - Washington State (Kennewick, Lynnwood/Edmonds, Seattle/Tacoma) - Oregon (Portland and Springfield) - Colorado (Ft Lupton) - Illinois (Vandalia) - Indiana (Spiceland) - Ohio (Columbus) - Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh and Harrisburg) - New York (Buffalo and Albany) - Connecticut (Enfield) Vetting: neutered, heartworm tested (negative), microchipped, rabies vaccine, bordetella vaccine, dhpp vaccine x 2, lepto x 2, dewormed, on monthly heartworm prevention, on monthly flea and tick prevention.
