About Chinchilla Freddy

Freddy is an adorable, playful, gentle, friendly and active, 18-month-old, male, black pearl Chinchilla with incredibly soft fur looking for a loving guardian. Chinchillas have a diet of mostly Timothy hay, pellets, fresh water and an occasional foraging treat like dried strawberry or dried plum. They love to take a dust bath twice a week, and their somersaults are utterly adorable to watch. Chinchillas, when properly cared for, can be long-term companions living on average 15 to 22 years. Chinchillas are native to the Andes mountains of northern Chile. They are agile and able to jump around mountain peaks and their dense fur protects them from the cold. That is why they need a large multi-level cage to jump from ledge to ledge. I've personally only seen wild Chinchillas at Machu Picchu in Peru and it was such a thrill. Chinchillas don't have sweat glands and are densely surrounded with fur, so they need to stay cool year-round at temperatures 75�F and below. Over-heating can be deadly! An AC unit is required for a chinchilla in the summer in Chicagoland. Chinchillas are an endangered species in the wild because they were hunted for their fur. They were brought to America to make fur coats and the breeders were so enamored with how sweet and adorable they were that they began keeping them as pets. Chinchillas enjoy their toys; wood is the best - Chewing helps with stimulation and to keep teeth safe. They also enjoy pumice stone and loofah. The toys can be hanging or tossed around the cage. Freddy is currently being fostered in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood.
