About Maggie

Pit Bull mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Meet Maggie, a two-year goofball with the world's largest smile. She's available through Charlotte Animal Control. Coming a long way from her days shivering at the shelter, Maggie has blossomed into sweet girl with a whole lot of love to give. Her affection is clear and contagious. Wanting to be beside you to keep you company, she'll continue to nudge you until you give her pets. Belly rubs, butt scratches, or anything in between, Maggie doesn't discriminate: she just wants your love. While she's been at her foster home, she's been working on building her confidence. She wants to please you and takes correction well; her ideal fur-ever parents will be patient and gentle with her until she gets her full confidence back. But don't let her fool you; she's very smart, quickly learning commands and her daily routines. Maggie loves to play, loving to chase after a ball or a Kong toy. And while she might not always bring it back, at least she's having a good time; based on our interactions with her, she has no problem with letting you take toys or food away. While she loves to play, she's also content to chill on the couch with you. She's a great medium energy dog, wanting to be with you but also knowing how to keep herself occupied. When she gets very excited, she might jump to put her paws on you, however, she's quite stationary most of the time and only occasionally barks, an added bonus. She's housetrained and a holder, not needing to be let out overnight. Right now, she's working on her crate training, and she's made great progress since she's been in foster. That being said, she can be left alone in a room without being crated; she's been perfectly fine alone, not showing any destructive tendencies. She does know 'sit,' 'stay,' and 'shake,' and she is working on her other basic commands. She's dog-friendly, but she will need slower introductions in neutral territory so that she can build trust with the other dog. So far, she's become best friends with our resident male pit bull, and they love to play together outside. She's shown amazing body language, especially as she initiates play. They'll take water breaks, shake off, and back off if they accidentally go too hard. With all the other dogs she's come in contact with, she's shown positive body language, and she's done very well on parallel walks with other dogs. On one walk, a small, unleashed dog ran up to her. She seemed more frightened than anything else, trying to get away from the ten-pound dog. Several other dogs surprised her and kept barking at her through a fence. She didn't bark back and quickly calmed down once she passed. She would love to chase a squirrel and is always on alert for one. She did meet a cat indoors, and after staring at it for a few seconds, she was called away, and she left it alone, which was a promising sign. She rides in the car well, whether in a crate or in the back (although she hasn't quite figured out how to sit in a car). We've been on several trips over two hours with her, and there was no barking or whining. She settled in and quickly fell asleep. Other volunteers at the shelter noted that she did exceptionally well with their 11, 12, and 13-year-old kids, saying that she had a gentle and fun personality. On walks, she's met other younger children, and she loved getting all the pets and attention from them. More info can be found here: https://24petconnect.com/CLTAdopt/Details/CHRL/A1223021
