English Springer Spaniel

Camden (Cam, Cammy (after Camden Yards) is a 3 and a half year old English springer spaniel. He is around 60-65 pounds with lots of playful energy and a gentle disposition. He is a very attached dog that likes to be right by your side everywhere. He craves affection and affirmation, and can be nervous when disciplined or when in high stress situations for extended time. He is very smart, alert, and a fast learner. He would do well with a family that can give him space to run, fetch, and explore often, as well as a home where he can feel close by and get plenty of touch. He is very curious, expressive, and all around just the best dog we've ever had. Over the last two years, though, Camden has become increasingly nervous in certain situations - mostly when he feels overwhelmed, threatened, or that he needs to be on guard. In these instances he has growled, and twice nipped at my sister in law, once breaking skin. These incidents, and our growing family have caused us to consider rehoming. Our fear is that our family life and lifestyle as the family grows is too out of step with the attention that Camden would require (both in keeping him engaged, but also managing his nervousness in certain situations). With people coming and going, and family staying for extended periods, it can be hard to manage him while also keeping him close. (We don't feel that a situation where he is locked away is right for him, as his need to be close and involved is very high). The .01% of time where he has been aggressive is unfortunately not sustainable with young kids growing up in the home. We don't think of him as an 'aggressive' dog, but rather a nervous and uncertain dog. He can easily feel threatened or spooked, and needs both space and reassurance when he does. We've gotten very good at reading his body language (again, he is very expressive), but we can't be everywhere all the time when the chaos of life is going on. The best home would be one where he has two experience dog owners that don't have the bustle of kids at home, and are active enough to afford him plenty of time to walk, run, play, and explore with them. He is still very trainable for all sorts of field activities, I would think. He loves honey and peanut butter, being chased, playing fetch, and running in fields/tall grass. He adores swimming and is very competent in the water. Cam is one of the most handsome dogs I know, and we get comments on his handsome face and unique roan markings whenever we go out. He can be a cuddling lap dog, but also a high energy outdoor dog. I think the latter would help his anxiety a great deal. He is good to be left alone at the house, and doesn't seem to have serious separation anxiety. Right now he is not well crate trained, moderate on the leash, but very capable when being walked with a beep/shock collar. Eager to please is a defining characteristic. He's our best buddy and it's devastating to be seeking rehoming, but we would be very grateful if someone could give him a second loving home.
