Adoption Fee: $50
Saint Bernard
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

I currently have a 6 year old Saint Bernard that we rescued from somebody off of Facebook about 3 years ago. We don't know much about his history but we know that he didn't have a leash, collar, food bowl, or toys and that he spent most of his time outside. He had heartworms when we got him and we went through the treatment for that. When we got him, he was very friendly and loving to anybody he met. We would take him out and about multiple times a week and he was very sociable. After about 6 months with us, he suddenly became fearful and extremely protective (?) when in contact with any stranger. This consists mostly of aggressively barking if they got close to us at all. We had a trainer come in and do an in-home assessment with him. He lunged at her while she was inside. The trainer said that since we don't know his background, it's hard to say if he's going to get better. We have worked with him on basic training and socialization. We love him so much but the aggression has just gotten to the point where we do not have the resources to help him have a happy, healthy life. For a while, I was able to just spend most of my time at home and not allow visitors and just deal with it, but circumstances have changed and it is unfair to Cooper and my roommate. I live in a home with a fence, but he consistently tries to get out if he sees something he wants to chase, (usually just cats) and we are extremely worried about him getting out and coming in contact with other people and what might happen. As I said above, we love him and have been trying to work with him over time, but this is just so much more than we know how to handle. We are really praying that we find somebody that is willing to work with him and let him warm up to them, and that has experience rehabbing dogs with an unknown history like his. This has been an extremely difficult decision but at the end of the day, I know that finding him somebody who knows how to help him is best for both of us. He LOVES his people so much and is the absolute best other than the over-protectiveness. I believe he would do better with strangers if he wasn't trying to protect us. To go to the vet, we have to sedate him with meds from the vet so we could potentially calm him to meet and warm up to a potential new home. I really think he would be perfect for your program. I know he wants to give love and be loved, I just cant give him the help he needs to do that :(
