About Mercury

Adoption Fee: $400
Anatolian Shepherd / Border Collie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Our Mercury has a broken heart!%A0He came to us from frazzled New York owners who had adopted him as a puppy from a rescue group that had brought him up from the South. When the adoption mismatch became evident, the rescue would not reclaim him. Mercury has been hard hit by losing his family, and it took some time for him to adjust to foster care. As a timid, youngster, the shock of a multi-dog foster life caused him great distress.%A0 Mercury needs a rescue savvy adopter to patiently help him live his best life. He appears to be an Australian Shepherd mix, who seemed out of place in his big city surroundings.%A0It's not easy to own a Herding dog in the city, due to their tenacious high energy and work ethic, but Mercury seems more mild-mannered than most of the Herders we've known.%A0 Despite the chaotic foster environment, Mercury seemed to hold his own and avoid trouble. He seems more at home in the Connecticut countryside.%A0 At 66 pounds, Mercury has a graceful, leggy stance, and his fluffy coat is a beautiful brown and white pattern. He is clearly a Herder, so he definitely needs an active lifestyle and a job.%A0Herders are hardwired to work, and if his adopters do not engage him mentally and physically, he will practice his herding skills in the house.%A0A bored, frustrated Herding dog is sure to make mayhem.%A0 Exercise and obedience training are the keys to managing the Herding Breeds. Mercury is a high energy dog, with a shy personality, with some stranger danger. He would thrive in a quiet environment with perhaps one other friendly dog, but kids and cats are a definite no go. Mercury would make a great running, walking or hiking partner. He is built for speed, but will adjust his pace to suit his Handler. Mercury needs at least two brisk daily leash walks, in addition to focused playtime each day.%A0 Obedience training is essential to meeting the needs of a young Herding dog. At two years old, Mercury already knows most basic obedience commands, so adopters should be able to handle him easily.%A0Structure and obedience work go a long way in providing Mercury the mental and physical challenges that he needs. Mercury is best suited to an active adult home, with a dog savvy folks who have the time and energy to give him daily exercise.%A0He is an active boy, who loves to be front and Center with his folks rather than relegated to a backyard.%A0 Mercury has great house manners and he is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect the occasional accident as he transitions to a new home. He is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has received all routine vaccinations and health screenings.
