About Gunther

Adoption Fee: $100
Akita
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Gunther is my long coat purebred American Akita who will be 2 years old next month. He is the most beautiful boy in the world, he is the light of my life, and I am crushed by the weight of this decision. As I write this, he is looking at me with the most love a dog parent could ask for. He is the sweetest boy with my family and I, but is wary of new people and takes some time to warm up. He likes everyone in my family, but he definitely favors women and feels a bit insecure around men sometimes. I've had him since he was a puppy, and, to my knowledge, nothing traumatic has ever happened with men to cause this. He has been around kids while growing up, but I don't think a house with kids would be the best option for him at this point. Akitas can be prone to dog aggression, even with socialization at a young age, and unfortunately that is the case with him. As he matures, it has become obvious that he is not meant to live with other dogs. He was raised with our two adult female dogs and until recently got along well with them. Unfortunately, things are not improving, and I want him to have the opportunity to be the only dog in the house. I believe it is too stressful for him to live with other dogs, and he is not being given the chance to truly thrive. I have two cats that he is ok with. He gets on well with my very laid-back, social cat, but he has an urge to play chase my higher energy cat who is not the biggest fan of dogs. He knows all the basic commands (come, sit, stay, lay down, roll over, shake, etc.), and he loves to be with his person at all times. He is mostly good on a leash, but still needs improvement with ignoring barking dogs on walks. Due to his long coat, he needs weekly brushing and regular baths with a thorough blow dry. He is prone to getting rashes if his coat is not kept up with. He has been to the vet for rashes in the past, and they determined that an allergy to chicken was the main cause. I keep him on a poultry-free diet now, and it seems to be working well. I hope to find the right fit for him so that he can relax and be the sweet, loving boy I know him as.
