Name:%A0 JASPER Breed:%A0 Catahoula Mix Age:%A0 3 years old (54#) Sex:%A0 Male (neutered) Location:%A0Morgan County, MO Vet Info:%A0 Blind Dog. HW negative and UTD on vaccines (per owner) 'He has malformed, smaller red eyes. He is either very very near sighted or completely blind as he runs into walls, furniture, and people that aren't where they're supposed to be according to his cognitive map. However, he can see light and dark as evidenced by his ability to sleep through the night without waking up and knowing that nighttime is for sleeping, unlike some blind dogs I've read about.' Owner reports: Jasper's owner rescued him from being euthanized. 'I live in a 700 square foot apartment with five dogs, two of whom ( Jasper and Scrappy) were only meant to be temporary. Jasper's previous owner was going to euthanize jasper because he got too big for her to walk ( pulls hard on the leash) and she was pending orthopedic surgery on her knees and hips.' Jasper is said to be an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is house broken but not leash trained. Jasper is reported to be good with adults, teenagers, other dogs and cats. Jasper knows: 'Good Boy'- means he did a good job and can expect a tasty treat 'No' means freeze/stop what you're doing Sit Off- paws on the floor get off me or the furniture'Go in your house'- means go in his crate ( which he will come with) 'When he first got to my house it was like he was afraid to eat his food and all the dogs crowding around him resulted in him growling at the other dogs crowded in the kitchen with him, hackles not raised, tail tucked-- like he was afraid to eat. I moved his food to the crate and put Jasper in his crate for every meal time and bone chewing time and haven't had an issue since.' 'He has an incredible mental mapping ability. He will wander around a new location for about a week, bumping into furniture, walls, doors, etc. but once he's mapped out his environment, he will run full force and keep up with the other dogs outside and not bump into stuff inside. He's mastered stairs ( I put a rug at the top and bottom of the stairs until he mentally mapped them). But, he does get very anxious if the furniture is moved around after his map is set. I moved a bunch of furniture upstairs and downs stairs after he was settled and for the next week, he hid on the bed and vomited whenever I left. About a week later, he'd memorizesd the new floor plan and it's been about 8 months to a year since he last vomited.' 'Jasper is a great, calm couch potato. He loves to play with larger dogs and then curl up and sleep with them, on the bed or in his crate. For a 'Special Needs'dog, he is very very easy to care for. I just don't have enough room in my small apartment.' Can anyone help Jasper? **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
