About Ember

Catahoula mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

We adopted Ember on February 3, 2019 from Rescueme.org. We believe that she may also be part Blue Heeler. She and our then 9 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog, Echo, were excellent companions for about 2 years, before Ember began exhibiting aggressive behavior toward Echo. The girls have very heated interactions that are unsafe. We have continued to hike daily and travel with both, but they are always separated. Now Echo is 13 and 1%BD%BD%BD%81%BD%BD%BD2 years old, and on 3/7/24 the girls got too close and Ember attacked her. The result was a large gash on Echo's shoulder and an emergency trip to the vet, which included anesthesia and multiple stitches. Though we continue to care for and love Ember deeply, this incident has forced us to make the most difficult decision of re-homing her. Ember is well trained and very affectionate toward people. On walks, she does not lunge or even show interest in other dogs, though we keep her separated. She will need to be in a home where she is the only animal, and also be kept separate from other dogs during outings. Ember is a very youthful nearly 9 year old and loves to play fetch and hike. We would classify her as a sport dog. For over 3 years we have been managing this situation...living with our home separated by baby gates, crates in cars and leashes on daily hikes. Though we have managed to keep the environment safe, this recent incident has made us reconsider for the safety of both girls and ourselves. It also brought to light the extreme level of anxiety that we live with daily...just ensuring consistently locking gates etc., and what we would do in an emergency situation. Although our record for safety has been almost perfect, Echo ended up in surgery for the first time in her life. We are grateful that her injury was not worse, but can not continue to put her in potential harm. Our hearts are broken, but we feel that rationally, re-homing Ember is our only choice.
