Meet Diego, he is a very sweet boy who was living in a garbage filled home with his girl friend who had 6 puppies (not his puppies). Diego's owner was hospitalized and there was no one to feed their dogs. A dog loving nurse went to the home to check on the dogs and what she found was horrific. Diego was tethered by a leash in the house that had broken windows and was filled with garbage, urine and feces. Diego had no access to food or water for at least 4 days. A neighbor went in the house and set Diego free and the nurse began calling ACS to get the dogs help. She had to fight to get them out to the property. It took ACS 3 weeks to finally go out and get the female dog and her puppies, but Diego was left behind because they couldn't. The ACS officers told the nurse that he was better off being left behind because he would be put to sleep if he was taken in. Poor Diego was now left without his owner and his only friend. The nurse working with the neighbors made sure Diego was fed, but he wouldn't let anyone get anywhere near him. The nurse fought with ACS for 3 months, over Diego. A winter freeze came through TX and poor Diego had no place warm to go. His owner had died and family boarded up his home and there was no dog house he could access. The nurse and a friend went out in the cold and found a dog house and stuffed it with straw and draped blankets over it to prevent the wind blowing in through any cracks or holes. He was also being fed daily. Then suddenly Diego disappeared. A quick search of the ACS site and Diego was found. ACS had finally picked him up. For all his wariness and supposed aggressive behaviors Diego instantly submitted to staff at ACS and was loving all of the attention he was now getting. Diego is now in a foster home and loving being an inside dog in a clean, warm and loving home. Diego is believed to be around 6 years old. He is up to date on vaccinations and is neutered. Diego is great with the other 3 big dogs in the home, but is not safe with cats. His foster family has been working with him on leaving the cats alone, but do not trust him alone with the cats. Diego is crate trained, he is not happy about going in the crate, but will go in it and is very well behaved when in the crate. Diego is house broken and slowly coming out of survival mode, he has started playing with toys and playing with the other dogs. He does have issues with resource guarding and will growl and lung at you if he feels like his treat or his spot on the dog bed is threatened. He has not bitten anyone. His teeth have not even made contact with human skin. Diego is a very sweet dog who was starving for attention. The nurse made sure he was not starving for food, but Diego's biggest need now is love and attention. Diego is on the small side, when he is at the weight he should be he will probably be around 40lbs. It is probably best if he goes to a home with no cats and no small children. He will need obedience training and to have very strict boundaries, to curb his resource guarding. He will probably be a good dog to teach tricks to, he can already walk on his hind legs like a poodle. Diego's breed is unknown and he could very well have some poodle in him. Diego has the potential to be a great ride or die dog for someone. He enjoys car rides and enjoyed his trip to the vet and Home Depot. Whoever adds Diego to their home will get a happy, loving and grateful companion. Won't you give Diego the happy ending he deserves?
