About Ruby Rose

Adoption Fee: $25.00
Beagle mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

My wife and I took Ruby in from a co-worker's divorce situation around Halloween 2023. She is a 6-8 year old beagle mix. Ruby is super sweet and very energetic. She loves car rides and most kitties that we have witnessed. She can be both quite active and a couch potato. She was about 50# when we got her and has trimmed down well and is now back to a healthy weight. Now for the cons: Food aggression - She and her former pack mates were free-choice fed prior to us taking her in. Her previous owners cut their feeding back to smaller portions and Ruby was not happy with that and became possessive during feeding time and around food bowls. For this reason, she did not mesh well with one of our existing pack members who is also a bit possessive. This led to a minor fight within 48 hours of us having her. Since that day, she has lived outside in our barn in a spare 12'x12' horse stall with a large outdoor run, contained by electric poultry netting. Nail trimming - We were only able to get one foot trimmed and it was a huge struggle. Her former owners just took her to the groomer to have them done, so who knows exactly how traumatizing her experience has been. Crating - She has never been crated before. We had to leave the morning after we picked her up to run errands. We decided to crate her just to be safe. In the 45 minutes that we were gone, she shredded the plastic pan, mangled the bars, and moved the crate across the room from where it sat with her in it originally. High prey drive - Ruby has shown too much interest in our horse and flock of free-range chickens. She has lived in the barn with these animals in very close proximity for about 4 months now and has not calmed down around them at all. She paces her run and barks at them constantly if she can see them, almost as if she is angry at them for being 'loose' while she is contained by the electric netting. She did go after and maul two of our chickens; once when a rooster flew into her pen, and a second time when she darted past my wife when she opened the door to feed her one evening. She didn't kill either chicken, but only because we were there to stop it from happening. To be fair, she had never seen chickens in her life before coming to live on the farm with us. All in all, she is a great dog. Very niche, but great nonetheless. We are just not able to provide her the home that she needs and deserves. She should be the only dog in the home and monitored closely around kids and other animals. She came from a home with other dogs and cats, but every new interaction could be very different. We have never had her around children so cannot attest to that aspect, but she seems to love meeting all sorts of new adults. Thanks for reading!
