Courtesy Posting: DOWNEY/LA COUNTY, CA (S CAL)- ID A5608292 - GINO IS NOW RESCUE ONLY DESPITE BEING VERY SOCIAL WITH PEOPLE AND OTHER DOGS- FOSTER AND RESCUE NEEDS ASAP X URGENT - 72 hrs EUTHANASIA WARNING ISSUED 4/3- ADORABLE, SWEET and DOG FRIENDLY AND VERY YOUNG 1 YR NEWFIE/FLAT COATED RETR LOOKING MIX 'GINO' IN NEED OF A FOSTER OR FOSTER TO ADOPT AND RESCUE ASAP - WHO CAN HELP? HE IS RESCUE ONLY- PLS CONTACT ROBIN FOR HELP OR WITH INTEREST Please help us find a foster or foster to adopt and rescue for young 'Gino' after he was returned to the shelter for some resource guarding of food. He had been adopted from the Downey shelter originally after being found as a stray. Gino is listed as a 1 yr old newfie mix weighing 55 lbs, also resembles a flat coated retriever mix. Gino was assessed on 1/1 and the shelter said, 'He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, pulled moderately on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar although he was wary. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his mouth was closed, his eyes were neutral, and his tail was neutral. He sniffed the ground. He entered the yard and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He roamed the yard for a few minutes before engaging in play with the other dogs. Gino is social with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle.' The shelter also added that 'He approached the handler with a relaxed body, soft eyes, ears up, an open mouth, and a neutral tail. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, back, abdomen, and chest with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth and touch his tail. He offered his front paws to the handler and allowed her touch both feet. He then jumped up on the handler and allowed her to pet him all over. When the handler tried to touch his back legs, he closed his mouth, sat down, and turned to look at the handler with wide eyes. He moved away from the handler, but then allowed her to continue petting him.' Even after he was returned, he had nice behavior notes which state, 'While in playgroups He did not react when one of the dogs began barking at him. He entered the yard and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He engaged in play with the dogs, and spent a lot of time splashing in the pool. He jumped up on the handler to solicit petting. Gino is social with the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle. During his handling assessment When the assessment was over, he leaned against the handler and rubbed his body against her legs. He jumped on the handler softly to solicit petting. He displayed no concerning behavior during the assessment.' However, 'During his food guarding assessment The handler could not get close enough to the food to finish the assessment, thus ending the food guarding assessment. He bit the hand each time it came into the vicinity of the food bowl'. 'The rescue was investigated and no longer active. The bite was minor no medical attention needed that we know of or saw in the investigation.' Sadly, irresponsible placement and lack of precautions seemed to have resulted in a likely preventable nip over food. Therefore, we feel Gino would benefit from training for resource guarding of food. Now, sadly he is at risk to be euthanized any day if a foster and rescue cannot be found. Rescues need fosters. If you are interested to foster or to adopt this sweetie, he can only be pulled by a rescue group, so please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who can try to pair fosters with a willing rescue group.
