About Catahoula

Catahoula mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

BEFORE READING THIS POST UNDERSTAND THAT HE NEEDS TO BE THE ONLY PET...is with an extremely heavy heart that I am writing this. We found catahoula as a stray when he was about 7 months. Our plan was to foster him but we fell in love with him. He is a complete sweetheart with all people including kids (although he gets so excited he sometimes knocks them over during play) unfortunately as he matured we have not been able to curb his prey drive and he killed one of our cats when one escaped out of the house. He is about 70 pounds and appears to be good with my 10 pound dog but I never leave them alone together. Him and the rez dog (we adopted him on the same day we found cata) play outside with an electric fence however they have started to redirect on each other. They can be the best of friends but then someone comes up the driveway or they see a deer and they run ans then attack each other and the rez dog is half his size so he doesn't win even though alot of times the rez dog starts it. My husband has severe ptsd and had to get a true service dog and cata is unable to get along with him. Pros: extremely sweet with humans, no health concerns, crate trained, housebroken, eager to please, beautiful dog, very athletic Cons: absolutely needs to go to a home where he will be the ONLY pet based on his previous behavior and prey drive, needs a person that has patience as he is high energy and sometimes is unable to control it (although when I take him away feom the other dogs he actually does well, needs a person that will exercise him daily and ideally take him everywhere, needs a fenced in yard or electric fence as he will run, will still pick up things in his mouth and eat them, occasionally chews up his bedding I love this dog so much but I can not have another animal hurt or killed so with a heavy heart we need to rehome him as it is not fair to him either. I will not let him go to anyone that wants to chain him up outside. He does love to run so being an outside dog would be fine as long as he comes inside at night and inclement weather while having a ton of human contact. He probably would make a good tracking dog as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I can be reached via email [email protected]
