About Luca

This sweet, affectionate 21/2 - 3 year old Canaan Dog has quite a story! Originally from a shelter in Bethlehem Israel, Luca was on his way to a foster in California but after spending over 13 hours in a crate in cargo, when it came time to change planes he refused to get back in his crate! (Do you blame him?!) Luckily the family here who was part of the transport took him in and has been fostering him while they look for his forever home. His breed can be wary of strangers, so he would appreciate slow introductions to people at his own pace until he feels safe. Once he knows someone can be trusted he'll warm up to them quickly and there's nothing he wouldn't do for cuddles and belly rubs. He has played with some dogs off-leash but this is a new venture for him, so we don't know yet if he is dog-selective. He could use guidance when it comes to other dogs however when he is on a leash. He knows his basic training commands and is exceptionally good at 'sit' and 'down.' His foster family has worked with a professional trainer and they continue to train him. They report he's making great progress as his breed is very smart and is known for its exceptional training ability. According to his foster family 'Luca is extremely loving, affectionate and loyal. He loves hanging out on the porch or in the backyard and would do best in a home with some enclosed outdoor space. He will happily rest his head on our laps or turn over for belly rubs while we are watching TV. We let him sleep by the side of our bed and he wakes us up gently with a soft paw on the bed when he wants to go out in the morning.' He would do best with an experienced forever person or family who would take pleasure in continuing to train him. As the professional trainer said: 'This is a great dog with tremendous potential. His wariness is based on fear so in the right home he will thrive.' Luca would do good in a home without little humans since too much excitement might make him feel overwhelmed. Luca is fully house trained, vaccinated and weighs around 65 lbs. All potential adopters will be fully vetted to ensure Luca finds the home he deserves.
