About George

Adoption Fee: $150
Australian Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

George is a 3yo purebred Aussie originally from Tooele, UT. George was previously owned by my mother who neglected to read and understand the terms and conditions of owning an Australian Shepherd. George is a wonderful little guy with a goofy personality. He loves to snuggle, be carried like a baby, and will flop over for belly rubs the second you look like you'll give him attention. He learns extremely quickly-- over the last six months we've gotten George to walk well on a lead, shortened his reactivity radius, given him resources to calm himself when reactive to the window, and taught him to wait which has helped his impulsivity immensely. He only wants to do well but due to inconsistent and neglectful caregiving from the start, George is extremely anxious and will default to aggressive-type behaviors as he is just a dog and was never taught proper behavior. George was raised with a female Golden that he got along with for the most part, but any new dogs are a huge hyper-excitement trigger for George. He gets along great with my 8yo dominant black cat, but I would be cautious with a timid cat. George would prefer to be the only dog, but has met dogs in the past and been polite. You will have to watch him for mild resource guarding of people, toys, and special treats like lick mats with food he doesn't get regularly. George was largely never walked/socialized and had limited contact with his primary caregiver. He was never hit, starved, or lacking in medical care but extreme deficits in training, socialization, and caregiving which has led him to develop fear aggression and hyper-excitement as reactions to humans and dogs, respectfully. He can resource guard spaces, but I believe this is primarily an extension of his fear and anxiety. George is extremely well-loved by myself and my partner, but it breaks my heart that we cannot afford to take care of him in addition my cat. We are fostering him at the moment until an adoption can take place. George is needing an owner who is well-versed in Aussies and/or is a trainer themselves. Professional training is a MUST for George. We would prefer that prospective applicants come to meet George outside our apartment in Pleasant Grove prior to making a decision. We would also prefer that we take the transition as slow as possible to allow George to become acclimated to you, with you coming to visit several times. George has nipped at 4 people, all due to them being strangers, and we want this to go as well as humanly possible for him and you.
