A volunteer writes: More than once on our walks, passersby have commented on how beautiful Suave Mente is; but this young, sweet pup has more pressing things on his mind than his looks - like how he ended up at a shelter and, more importantly, how he's going to find a rescue group to get him out. Though feeling overwhelmed and nervous in a shelter environment, his desire for human companionship is even stronger. Greeting me in his kennel with wags and wiggles, he's ready for some attention and affection. During our initial interactions, he'd get over-aroused - jumping up on me when I'd pet him. But he may be learning that it quickly ends the fun because lately he keeps all four paws on the ground more often, choosing instead to lean into my legs and do-little wiggle dances as I scratch his back and sides and rub his cheeks. Back in his kennel, I give him a plush toy, and smile as he happily swats it around before stretching out and going to work on slowly pulling it apart. With a loving home, daily exercise, and lots of fun things to keep him busy, Suave is sure to thrive! He was easily collared, a photo was taken, and was scanned with no issues. He noticed the net in the corner and became fixated on it. Staff had to remove the nets from the room and once tension was loosened on his leash, he ran towards the corner. He would occasionally side eye and hard stare. At a point, a staff member dropped an item and he became fixated on it. We needed to distract him by moving him towards the door. He began to pant more and was unable to settle so he was taken straight into his kennel. Basic Information:: Suave Mente s a tan male dog that was found wandering loose on the street and was brought to ACC as a stray. Summary (2):: 9/21/23: Suave Mente was observed yanking on his kennel blocker, banging against his kennel door, and screeching when the room was empty. 09/19/23 Behavior remains the same. When leashing, Suave will bite at the leash but not tug. Suave enters and exits the building with no issue. Suave takes treats gently and allows touch. Summary (3):: 09/12/23 When the handler approaches the kennel, Suave mente is vocalizing at the handler with a loose body and wagging tail. The handler unlocks the kennel and as they place it on the kennel door, Suave jumps and attempts to bite the lock. The handler proceeds to leash Suave with ease, heading outside for a walk. Suave maintains his loose body while walking moderately beside the handler. Suave sits on his own when he wants a treat, taking them gently when administered. The handler pets Suave which he allows. Suave will muzzle touch the handler's treat pouch during the walk. The handler returns Suave back to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. 09/05/23 As the handler approaches the kennel, Suave is lying down neutrally. He calmly rises as the handler unlocks the kennel door. Suave is leashed with ease and they proceed outside for a walk. Suave maintains a still, neutral posture as he prances moderately beside the handler. Suave takes treats gently when administered and will catch them when tossed. The handler pets Suave which he allows, leaning in for more. The handler returns Suave back to the facility where he enters the building and his kennel with no issue. 09/01/23 When the handler approaches the kennel, Suave is standing still with a gentle tail wag. The handler leashes Suave with ease and they proceed outside for a walk. Suave displays a looser body, and more of a wagging tail, all while walking moderately beside the handler.
