Courtesy Posting: URGENT! HANDSOME YOUNG CHOW OR CHOW X BOY AVAILABLE TO ADOPT AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA. CHAPO NOW NEEDS A LOVING HOME OR FOSTER AND/OR RESCUE TO SAVE HIS LIFE! WHO CAN HELP? CHAPO - ID #929219 Humane Society of Southern AZ, Tucson Please help us find a loving home, foster and/or rescue for this striking young chow gentleman before his time runs out. Chapo is believed to be only 1.5 years old, 60 lbs and is said to adore the company of dogs who are just like him - friendly, laid-back, and ready for some fun. The shelter has many great things to say about Chapo, but like most chows and is typical of the breed, the shelter said, 'he requires some time when making new human friends. However, once he warms up he will boop you with his nose or tap you with his paw for attention and has the cutest tail wiggle when he's happy. He also loves playing with stuffy toys and tennis balls once he's comfortable enough with a person to engage in play. He has done well with other dogs, both male and female, small and large. He does like to try mounting other dogs sometimes, but accepts their corrections and will give appeasement signals after he's been corrected. He especially loves grooming other dogs (I have a cute video of him grooming his dog friend Donnie that I can send along!) and engaging in light chase-based play. We're still working on his leash walking skills. He's doing well, but will pancake briefly or buck up if he sees a place (e.g. the play yard) or person he really likes but isn't able to go toward. He's done well with simple verbal encouragement to keep walking, and is treat motivated (loves hot dogs and sweet treats the most) so he can be treat lured as well. Chapo can be nervous with medical handling, but does well if you go slow. His previous owner did muzzle train him for vet visits, but I don't believe we've needed to use a muzzle for him at the shelter. He is also crate trained. He is scared to get into cars, but settles once he's inside. We've also seen a fear of hoses/spraying water, but he was able to tolerate being bathed at the groomer. He was an owner surrender, so we have a bit more information on how he was in the home. He has never been around cats, but did live with two other dogs that he was related to (his mother and father). He was playful and social with them, but would growl if they approached his food bowl; according to the previous owner he never showed any escalation, but would do best fed separately from other animals in the home. No history of resource guarding food with humans, just other dogs.' We are looking for a good home (ideally familiar with chows), or a foster and rescue to save Chapo. If you have an interest in adopting him, please go to his shelter listing at: https://www.adoptapet.com/pet/39125015-tucson-arizona-chow-chow-mix?fbclid=IwAR1f9VJvcUSVDB_d3oWboJklzscdrvBxUTjbBxuHReRI2UlWxwuMRYwOkdE and call (520) 327-6088 x 173 and or email [email protected] and ask for ID #929219. For further information or assistance, particularly if you are interested to foster, please also contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is assisting the shelter with his placement.
