Name: Iris Age: approx. 3 years old Breed: Lab mix, 35 pounds Sex: Female (not spayed) Location: Webb County, TX Iris was found roaming the streets as a stray in August of 2023. Her Good Samaritan named her after a flower, the Black Iris, which is only grown in Jordan and is becoming extinct. To them, Iris is unique and deserving of the name. Iris is a very sweet dog who deserves so much more than she has been given. Her Good Samaritan is seeking a rescue or adopter who can provide her with the medical care and opportunity to live her best life! Vet Info: Iris is completely blind. She is not spayed or microchipped, but she is up to date on vaccinations and has tested heartworm negative. Per her Good Samaritan: 'I have taken Iris to my vet where she was SNAP tested and given her vaccines. She tested negative for heartworms but was positive for ehrlichia and anaplasma. Additionally, her protein levels were low, and she is anemic. She is on heartworm and flea and tick preventative as well as a vitamin supplement. She is on Doxycycline and a steroid as well. I took her to an opthamologist where they determined her blindness may be genetic or the result of trauma to the head. She is malnourished and is being given two meals a day consisting of a mix of dry Purina Lamb and Rice, one raw egg in one meal and cooked beef liver in one meal to help with her anemia. She has a problem with her jaw. She doesn't open her mouth all of the way when she yawns and tilts her head to the right. She is getting her jaw X-rayed on 19 September to try to determine what the issue is.' Dog Info: Iris is an indoor dog with the run of the house She does use potty pads and will go to the bathroom when taken outside. She doesn't like to walk on a leash without being coaxed with food as she is blind. She's hesitant to move without coaxing. Iris is friendly and not aggressive. She's very quiet as her Good Samaritan hasn't heard a sound out of her. Iris has been an outgoing girl who can be shy at times and is good with women and small dogs. Iris has not been around too many men, but she's been good with the male vet techs and veterinarians that she's met. She's living with two small dogs currently and does fine with them. Iris is not possessive with treats, toys, or food. She has no known bite history. Iris is a calm girl but needs help to be led out of the room she sleeps in. She's understandably cautious and needs time to adapt. Iris is a very sweet, quiet, and loving girl. From Iris' Good Samaritan: 'After visiting the vet for X-rays, it has been discovered that someone shot her in the neck with a pellet gun. Not one, but TWO pellets were discovered in her neck. Meet Iris, a resilient three-year-old black lab who has faced the harsh realities of abandonment and neglect on the unforgiving streets of Laredo, Texas all while being completely blind. On top of this, while she was forced to navigate and fend for herself in a world of darkness, this poor girl was also bullied by the other dogs on the street. We have named this sweet, resilient girl after the Black Iris, a rare flower only found in Jordan and facing extinction, signifying her unique and deserving nature. Iris is now safe under our rescue, but her journey to recovery is far from over. We anticipate substantial vet bills as we strive to nurse her back to health. Thankfully and miraculously, Iris tested negative for heartworms. However, she did test positive for flea and tick disease, which we are diligently treating. Her blood work revealed a protein deficiency and anemia, prompting specialized vitamins to aid her recovery. Iris' eye examination by an ophthalmologist revealed retinas and corneas in good condition, yet a haze in one eye that requires ongoing medication to prevent further issues. The ophthalmologist suspects a head trauma or facial injury, possibly from a past traumatic incident, which may have resulted in neurological problems. To explore this further, we are actively seeking a neurologist for evaluation, including a potential MRI. Additionally, Iris will need to be spayed once she regains her health, and an upcoming X-ray will investigate her jaw issues. This sweet girl has a whole lot going on, but we are determined to do whatever it takes to nurse her back to health and eventually find her a loving forever home. But, we cannot do this alone as Iris' bills are staggering. Please consider making a small donation toward Iris' medical care or sending her a much-needed item from her wishlist below. Every dollar and supply goes a long way and helps us show Iris the beautiful life she has been missing out on. Thank you so much for your support and we will be sure to keep you updated as we progress down this road together! https://cuddly.com/donate/4926773/iris' Please email [email protected] if you're interested in Iris!
