[Read About Natural Seizure Care] Please help us find a loving, forever home for this special needs sweet female chow puppy who is now approximately 15 weeks old. Yuan came into the Albuquerque shelter approximately one month ago as a stray, but is currently being fostered at a temporary foster home. Her foster tells us Yuan 'is very friendly and outgoing with people and dogs, loves to play, loves toys'. After it was noted she was having some tremors and ataxia though, 'she received extensive care and diagnostics in our clinic, and is generally healthy aside from the neurological issue. Our vets are pretty sure she has cerebellar hypoplasia (link below). All other tests have shown that she is normal and healthy. The shelter vet has stated, 'No ongoing medical treatment is expected, but if anything changes with her condition, adopters will be advised to follow up with their private veterinarian. The condition usually results in a wobbly gait, head tremors and/or exaggerated, clumsy movements. It does not get worse over time and there is no treatment for it, but dogs with cerebellar hypoplasia have normal personalities and intelligence and can make excellent pets to the right household. Adopters may need to make adjustments to the household to accommodate the disability. ' Her foster says 'She can walk and run very well, but does have the typical clumsiness, tremors, and frequent falls of her condition. She is almost completely housetrained. At this point the only special care she needs is to be kept in a space that doesn't include stairs or other obstacles that could lead to injury if she falls, and sometimes assistance eating. She is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on her vaccines. ' We have nice video of Yuan showing that she still gets around fine despite her special needs, and plays with other dogs on this link: September 6, 2023 - YouTube. As you can see, Yuan is completely adorable, and we are hoping to find a great home that understands the level of extra care she will need throughout her life, not just someone who falls for a cute puppy. Being also familiar with her breed is a plus. If you would like to learn more about Yuan and are considering opening up your home to this special needs, special girl who deserves to be loved, please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is assisting the shelter with her placement. She is adoptable with a medical waiver with the noted disclosure above of her condition, and the shelter would be happy to discuss her medical needs and daily routine as needed. Sarah at the shelter can also be reached at [email protected] for further information.
