About Riley

Riley had a rough start to life but things are turning around! I found Riley as a stray in Dec 2022. Shelters and rescues were full (and continue to be), and so I decided to care for him myself and find him a loving home. While getting him healthy, he's gone from malnourished and distrustful to a healthy, fun-loving, and confident pup. Riley looks to be a German Shepherd and is estimated to be 7-8 years of age, weighing about 75 pounds. He's intelligent and a quick learner - he is housebroken and crate-trained, and has mastered basic obedience, loose-leash walking, and some tricks (paw/handshake, rollover, spin). He also has loved beginner agility training. At his age, he is not super-energetic, but he does need regular physical activity as well as brain-work. He is typical GSD - dramatic, affectionate, protective, velcro, and obsessed with balls especially if they squeak. Riley's main challenge is leash reactivity. He will react to other dogs, loud trucks, and cyclists when on walks. He has gone through intensive training to gain general life skills and work on his reactivity. Given his history, he may be a little more sensitive than other GSDs, requiring a softer touch in training. While leash reactive, he does great with other dogs while at daycare or boarding, and has had lots of fun on field trips to various farms and lakes around Atlanta. Riley has heart worm (is on slow-kill treatment), but is otherwise healthy, up-to-date on vaccinations, and carries Trupanion health insurance. He has also been neutered and microchipped. Riley needs a GSD-experienced home and likely should be an only dog (no other dogs, cats or small animals). However an experienced owner who is willing to dedicate the time and energy to slowly integrating Riley into a multi-dog home may also be a good fit.
