About Leah

Adoption Fee: $150
Shih Tzu / Yorkie
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

Leah is guessed to be about 10 yrs old. She's healthy, fully vetted, and ready for the next phase in her life. She has been horribly traumatized by humans and takes a while to warm up to new people. We are specifically looking for a quiet, all-adult home where there aren't a lot of visitors. She is very reactive to new people and is not the kind of girl who wants to go out visiting. It's instinctual for Leah to want to chase cats but with close supervision, in less than a week, she co-exists peacefully with our cat and wants to play with her. It's also her fear-based instinct to go after other dogs but with a mellow, non-reactive dog and an attentive parent, she'll be okay in a home with other dogs. It just takes a little gentle coaching. We've got her socializing with an 80# Pit daily and living with a cat as a BFF so her compatibility with other animals will depend on the other animals and the person/people supervising. This poor little one is very head shy initially and has obviously been hit and kicked in the past. Since she's been here, she's been learning that not all touch is bad. She's good for baths. She now meets me at the door with excitement and joy and wants to be picked up. She also recently learned that she likes to be brushed but it's still kind of scary. She'll sit with you on her terms and likes light petting but will sometimes suddenly snap as if she's having a PTSD flashback. When she does this, she will put her mouth on you and make scary noises but she's never actually bit or caused injury. It's just her way of telling me she's scared and I'm being too forward. Same with feet, don't try to block the door with your foot or she thinks she's being kicked again and will react. There are a lot of photos and videos of Leah and the progress she's made with us on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AngelsRetreatRescue If you think you are the one we're looking for to help restore this little one's faith in humanity, please fill out our easy online adoption application here. Feel free to email us with any questions about her at: [email protected]. Thank you for taking the time to read about this special little girl.
