LOCATION: We have homes in NEW JERSEY and VIRGINIA NICO THREE-YEAR-OLD MALE ACD PLEASE HELP. We are heartbroken. Rehoming because nipped & is now growling at our toddler Contact: Jordan, call or text See more info below. %BD%BD%90%BEAbout Nico: Nico is a 3-year-old, 66lb male pure-bred Australian Cattle Dog (Yellow heeler) residing in Jersey City, NJ. He was born on March 28, 2020. He is neutered, vaccinated, and tested negative for heartworm in October 2022. Since his last heartworm test, he has received monthly Simparica Trio treatment. Nico is an exceptionally intelligent dog. He is very quick to learn new commands. He already knows 'sit,' 'down,' 'stay,' 'up,' 'off,' and 'get it.' He is highly energetic and easily trainable. He loves to snuggle. Nico is happy to sleep with you throughout the night, but he understands the command 'off' when it's time to get off the bed. While friendly towards adults, he tends to feel anxious around other dogs and does not get along with cats. Nico's favorite activity is playing fetch with a ball or stick, and he can play for hours. He loves to swim. As an Australian Cattle Dog, he may try to herd strangers during walks. To manage this behavior, he is walked on a harness, and we maintain distance from unfamiliar individuals. Nico loves running and can cover up to 6 miles daily. However, due to the demands of caring for our two children under two years old, he has been unable to maintain his usual exercise routine. Nico is both house-trained and leash trained. He eats twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. He is not crate-trained, and would not be happy in a crate. %BD%BD|%BDIdeal Owner: We envision an ideal owner for Nico as someone who is high-energy, without children or other pets, and with a large outdoor space. They must reside in a suburban or rural setting, which aligns better with Nico's needs. Most importantly, they must have a genuine love for dogs. We require a $150 adoption fee to ensure adopters are serious about making Nico part of their family and will treat him accordingly. %BD%BD%BD%BDWhy we are rehoming: Nico's journey with us began when we adopted him as a 3-month-old puppy during the peak of the COVID pandemic. At that time, we were stationed in Joshua Tree, California. Later, I relocated to the East Coast for graduate school, and Nico accompanied me on the cross-country trip by car. A year after settling in, we welcomed our first baby, followed by another baby the next year. Nico has always been gentle and affectionate towards our infants. However, recently he has developed fear towards our 2-year-old. As toddlers tend to have poor boundaries, Nico began growling at her and even nipped at her when she pushed him to correct her behavior. We have tried to address this issue, including behavioral training, medication, and ensuring he receives ample exercise. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we no longer feel comfortable keeping Nico in our home. We anticipate having more children, and it is evident that Nico is unhappy in a home with toddlers. Moreover, urban living has proven to be challenging for him. Therefore, we are actively seeking to rehome him with an individual who resides in a suburban or rural area, preferably with a large yard and ample space for him to move around. Our small condo and limited patio do not provide him with the necessary environment. This decision has been incredibly difficult for us as we have loved Nico since we welcomed him into our family. However, we believe it is crucial to prioritize the safety of our children. Please only contact if you want to give Nico a loving home.
