About Zora

Adoption Fee: $375
Boxer / Beagle
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Zora is a beautiful, gentle, loveable pooch searching for her forever family. She is estimated to be just about a year old and is 45 pounds; a great medium size! Her breed is unknown, but may have some Beagle, Boxer, Lab, and Terrier in her family tree, and looks a lot like a mini Black Lab. She has a velvety, sleek, shiny black coat with beautiful dark brown highlights. Zora was originally found as a stray in Hazard, Kentucky. She found herself at animal control in mid-January. Animal control is a loud, chaotic, and frightening place, and Zora being a bit timid by nature, she spent much of her time huddled in a corner. Unfortunately, black dogs are often overlooked, and often the last to be rescued or adopted and so poor scared Zora sat in her kennel for two months. Overlooked and unnoticed in an endless stream of surrendered or lost dogs entering the shelter. About ten weeks after entering the shelter, Zora surprised everyone by giving birth to two tiny pups overnight, alone and in a cold kennel. Zora must have been impregnated right before entering the shelter and never showed overt or obvious signs of pregnancy. Unfortunately, after spending almost her entire gestation period in such a stressful environment, Zora could not care for her pups and was not producing enough milk to sustain her pups. Thankfully, there was another new mom at the shelter with nursing pups who willingly adopted Zora's pups and cared for them as her own. After hearing this sweet girl's plight, we offered to take her into our foster program at Pal's Place and offer her some much-needed love and TLC. Zora has been in foster care for a few weeks now and is thriving! Seeing this shut-down, defeated, and scared pup blossom into a happy, silly, extremely affectionate dog has been so rewarding. She can still be a little timid when meeting new people and can still be a little unsure in new environments, but every day she gets more confident. Once comfortable, she showers her humans with abundant love and is a master snuggler. She is a very young adult, still shows a lot of puppy energy, and loves to romp in the yard with her canine foster siblings. Zoomies are activated throughout the day, and she loves nothing more than getting the other dogs in her foster home to engage in a game of chase. Zora is crate-trained and does very well with her housebreaking when taken out regularly. Zora's ideal home is with guardians who are patient and understanding, can give her all the time she needs to adjust to a new home, and can continue confidence building, and provide plenty of love and attention. We guarantee it will be repaid tenfold! We think Zora would really love another playful canine companion in the home, but it is not a complete necessity. You may notice a squint in some of her pictures in her right eye. Shortly after her rescue, Zora was diagnosed with Entropia, a painful and irritating condition where the eyelashes actually grow inwards towards the eye, scraping the lens throughout the day. The condition was surgically corrected when she was spayed and no further care is necessary. She is now enjoying a pain-free eye for the first time in her life! She is also fully vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm tested (negative), and ready to go to her forever home! Zora's adoption fee to the rescue is $375. She is in a foster home on Chicago's north side and can be seen by appointment only after an application has been submitted and approved.
