About Harley

Harley is a 9-month-old, 61-pound Shepherd mix. He came to us as a local owner surrender. Harley had been passed through several homes and the woman who brought him to our vet clinic had only had him a few days. She had no money to help Harley. He didn't feel well, was emaciated at 36 pounds, and had horrible diarrhea. We suspected Harley had parvo, but his test was negative. We hospitalized him and started him on fluids and antibiotics. He got better quickly, and we got him into a foster home. After the first few days in his foster home, we knew there was something wrong with Harley. He was ravenously hungry and still had loose stools. At this point we suspected he was an Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) dog. His intestinal tract was inflamed, and he couldn't absorb the nutrients from his food. We started Harley on �%BC teaspoon of Tylan powder with each meal and gave him a B12 injection. In just a few days Harley's stools formed and he felt a lot better. Harley gained weight and thrived. He will either need to eat a hydrolyzed protein diet or will need a B12 injection once a month and Tylan powder on his food. A bottle of B12 lasts a year and costs $10, it's easy to administer. His Tylan is $70 a bottle and should last him more than 4 months. Harley was not well socialized as a puppy. He bonds quickly to his people and loves them unconditionally. He follows his foster parents everywhere they go. Harley is scared when new people come into his home and barks and backs away, it takes him some time to feel safe. Harley's foster parents are working hard getting him out and about and used to people coming into his home. He is improving but this issue won't be fixed overnight. Harley needs people willing to be patient and consistent with him. Harley is a good boy. He does great with other dogs and loves to retrieve. Most of all Harley loves his people and getting attention. He walks well on a leash, knows how to sit, lay down, stay, and takes treats gently. Harley loves sleeping snuggled up next to his people. He requires a physically fenced yard so he can safely run and play. Harley is house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested and microchipped.
