About Athena

Athena is a 6 year old Belgian Malinois, born in May 2017. She is spayed and is in very excellent health. She is a very high energy dog, and her favorite thing to do is play fetch with a frisbee along with loves from her people. She walks well on a leash, also does well returning on command while off leash. She can be a little stubborn at times, but overall is intelligent and sweet. Her kisses are sloppy with that gigantic tongue she has. She loves to play with her people, so watch your feet when walking because a toy may end up tripping you :). We took Athena in about 8 months ago from an older gal who couldn't keep up with her anymore. During our time with her she has been a wonderful companion. The only downside is she did not acclimate well to the younger dogs we have in our home due to her extremely dominant personality. She would be better suited in a home as a single dog. Athena does well with adults and older children once she gets to know them. She has a limited exposure to younger children, but displayed the same dominant traits as she did with our other dogs. So, a home with small children would not be an appropriate placement for her. Crowds would not be good for her because she can be snappy around new people. If going on a walk with high foot traffic she would need a muzzle. Athena does not travel well. She displays very high anxiety when traveling (panting, pacing, barking, shedding) which makes it dangerous to have her in the vehicle with you. This is an unfortunate trait since our family loves to travel a lot, and we always take our dogs with us. Athena has a nervous/anxiety tick where she 'Grooms' fabric items (couches, dog toys, blankets, dog beds, mattresses, etc.). She does this the same way a dog would scratch an itch with their front teeth. This is normal for her. She has not displayed the dreaded destructive bored Malinois behavior since being with us, but that does not mean it isn't there. Her previous owner advised us she has never been destructive like that. Athena will stay in our home until a suitable adoptive family can be found. If Athena is not the dog for you please reach out to your friends and family to see if she is the dog for them. She needs to be placed immediately. Our family is moving this summer and she will not be able to move with us.
