I have a 3 year old American Akita that I am trying to find a forever or rescue home for as I am unable to provide him with the attention and time that he needs and deserves. I recently became a single father, my son was diagnosed with autism(resulting in him having difficulty with boundaries), I have a 6 year old daughter as well and became one of the primary caregivers for my disabled mother who has progressing multiple sclerosis.%A0 My mother was able to help care for him when I was working but is now unable to do so.%A0 I now have to work 2 jobs since my divorce so the%A0circumstances since getting him have dramatically changed. If you are able to help or know of any organizations that could, I would appreciate it. I am starting to notice a change in him and Akita's are already very stubborn and independent so I really want to find someone or somewhere that is able to take and manage him as this is a heartbreaking situation for our family. I have contacted his breeder who states that he no longer breeds Akitas so returning him is not an option. We are in NC but would drive him anywhere to make sure he is safe and loved. He is neutered.%A0 He is a typical Akita.%A0 %A0If he doesn't like a situation he lets you know, chases birds and honestly we think he prefers adults.%A0 He likes to follow his grown ups around the house, go for some short walks a few times a day, which with my mom's disability progression and my work schedules has been more difficult.%A0 He is due to go to the vet this month for a check up but his rabies vaccinations and all are current.%A0 He is crate trained, potty trained and actually prefers to eat there.%A0 His favorite snack is ice cubes which we found out prevents him from drinking too much water while still being hydrated.%A0He follows basic commands, Sit, Wait, Down, Paw. I believe he would benefit from additional training especially entering a new situation. We do have another dog that is older and he pretty much ignores him, but we never leave them unsupervised because of the Akita nature and they are both males. %A0This is truly just a horrific circumstance change for our family or we would never need to re-home him.%A0 In preparation, I am honestly going to try and improve his walking skills again, my sister is coming home from college a few times a week to try and do some more things with him to make any transition as smooth as possible. %A0I know there are things in life we can't control but this one is a tough one, in addition to the other things we are dealing with. I definitely want his new owner to be experienced with the breed and preferably one that has owned Akitas in the past, and I just want to reiterate, that I am willing to drive him anywhere in the US that will provide him a loving and happy home.
