About Cody

Adoption Fee: $100
Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Cody is a very loving, affectionate and loyal dog. He gets very attached to 'his people'. He loves hugs and being petted and scratched. He likes to spend considerable time giving kisses. He is potty trained and follows our verbal commands for us. That makes this process difficult for us on many levels. Cody wants to be an active dog; he deserves to be played with daily and trained to enjoy being walked and to interact with the environment appropriately. Unfortunately, my husband and I both have very limiting mobility issues which we did not have when we adopted Cody and which make it impossible to play with, train or go on walks with Cody. Our son is very young, and Cody wants to be on top of the people he loves. His paws are scratchy as with any dog but our son and his young friends are afraid to interact or play with Cody because he can be overbearing with affection and has not been effectively trained to behave another way. I had a trainer coming once a week to train Cody and he was responding well but then my injuries now prevent me from taking part in his training. Our HOA has given us a number of citations about Cody because when he is outside, he barks a lot at times. If he hears people nearby or sees an animal or another dog nearby, he charges toward the gate and our neighbors continuously complain that they are scared even though we live on a cul-de-sac and neighbors can easily bypass our home. Nevertheless, the neighbors have complained to the HOA so often, Cody can only go outside in his yard to pee and poop and then right back in the house. While on a leash, if Cody sees a car or another animal, his instinct is to chase and tug hard on the leash, so we can't take him on walks. The training was supposed curtail that behavior, but we couldn't continue his training, again due to debilitating injuries. On occasion, our pool and yard workers have left the gate to our yard open and Cody gets loose. Cody runs toward neighbors and scares them and we have been cited by our HOA for that. Even though we put chains and locks on our fence, they still come open and our helpers swear they don't leave the gates open. Despite the fact that Cody is a beautiful, sweet and very affectionate dog who loves to play and stay attached to his people, we must place him in a home better suited for his needs. Over the past year and 3/4 that we have had Cody, he has become so ingrained in our hearts that if there is some way to keep Cody in the kind of environment he deserves, he will no longer be available for adoption. As for now, we have no better options.
