About Klaus

Adoption Fee: $250
Rottweiler
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Klaus's story began August 20th, 2021, when his mama Sasha gave birth to him and three other puppies at Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control. As soon as Sasha's hold was up, we took her and her four puppies out of the shelter and got them into a foster home. Klaus was eight days old. His eyes weren't even open when he got to his foster home. Klaus was raised by Sasha and his foster mom. Sasha taught Klaus how to be a dog. His foster mom taught him to love people. She held Klaus and gave him a bottle when Sasha didn't have enough milk for him and rocked him to sleep in her arms. She reassured him when he was scared and taught him how to be a confident puppy. Klaus went to his adopters when he was 12 weeks old. We did our due diligence. We ran background checks, called three personal refences, and did a home visit prior to his adoption. We also made sure he got along with the female Alaskan Malamute in his home. We checked on him after the adoption to make sure things were going well. Because Klaus was going to be a large adult when fully grown, we didn't neuter him. He was adopted with a contract stating his owners had to have him neutered at a year of age when he was fully grown. Klaus was neutered on September 22nd, 2022 and his adopters provided us proof. Just over a month later, on October 25th, 2022 a Rottweiler was posted on the Cedar Rapids Area Lost Pets Facebook page. He was running loose in Benton County. He was scared and would not approach anyone. Cedar Valley Humane Society had to catch him in a live trap. That dog was Klaus. We don't know how he ended up 30 miles from his home, but we suspect he was given away. Our dogs are microchipped and registered to their adopters. Fur Fun stays on as a rescue contact for life. Klaus's adopters didn't respond to CVHS's calls so we were called. We immediately went and got Klaus and got him into a foster home. We carefully watched Klaus that night and had him at the vet the next morning. Klaus was carrying his right rear leg and it was swollen. Both of his ears were infected, and his paw pads were raw and bleeding from running. We have never had one of our dogs dumped before. Klaus's adopters signed an adoption contract that states 'If for any reason I cannot keep the adopted dog, I agree to notify Fur Fun Rescue immediately and return the animal. Failure to return the animal if I am not able to keep it will result in a $500 fine and legal action may be taken against me, the adopter, and the person I gave the dog to.' We sued the and won. As Klaus was healing from his injuries, he was consuming gallons of water and urinating often. We suspect this is why his adopter's dumped him. What they should have done was taken him to the vet. Klaus has Diabetes Insipidus which is totally different than sugar diabetes. His body does not produce enough of the hormone ADH to regulate itself. We started Klaus on Desmopressin, a synthetic hormone that replaces the ADH his body doesn't produce. Klaus takes the Desmopressin three times a day and now drinks and urinates normally. His Desmopressin currently costs $17.00 a month. Klaus is now an 18-month-old, 85 pound Rottweiler. He is one of the smartest dogs we have seen and has skills on board. Klaus knows how to sit, lay, shake, lay down, and knows the place command. He also has pretty good leash manners. Klaus loves to learn and is willing to learn anything you would like to teach him. Klaus's foster family has two dogs of their own and two little girls. He does well with everyone. Klaus is still a puppy and likes to play rough so a dog that matches his size and energy would be a good playmate for him. He requires a physically fenced yard to run and play safely. Klaus is house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped.
