About Winston

Winston is an 80lb, 2-year-old mix. He was surrendered to Double Dog Dare by his owners. This handsome boy did not have the best socialization as a puppy which caused him to develop some reactivity towards things that spook him. Usually, people or things that come out of nowhere, tend to startle him the most and he will lunge and bark in an attempt to scare them away. Back in May, Winston completed basic obedience training with a professional trainer (now his foster) where he learned his basic commands, built confidence, and learned that his handler will protect him in scary situations. After a few months of being back with his owners, they stopped keeping up with his training and he began to go back to old habits. That is the thing about training, it is ongoing, not a magic trick. Winston's owners were not willing to continue putting in the work and time to maintain Winston's training and chose to rehome him instead. Luckily his trainer is a foster for Double Dog Dare so he is now living with her where he works daily on his obedience and learning how to face his fears. Overall Winston has been very misunderstood and just needs an owner he can trust to take charge. Winston will need someone who has the time to set aside to practice his obedience and is willing to attend training lessons to learn how to properly handle him. Winston loves people, food, and toys, and seems to get along with other dogs. He ignores dog-savvy cats and though he may do better in a home without younger kids, he has been said to do very well with them.
