Shyanne is a 2.5 year old black female Doberman mix. She was rescued by Greyhound Adoption League of Texas via the Animal League of Washington County after being surrendered by her owner. Shyanne is a tripod but it doesn't slow her down one bit. She should not live with cats, nor small dogs. She's a quick learner when you know how to tell her what you want her to do, or not to do. She has a lot of energy and running 5K is not an issue for her even with only 3 legs! This doesn't mean that you must run with her daily to burn out the energy, though some kind of exercise or playtime is needed as she's not a couch potato. Besides being smart she also has a strong will, so don't let the abundance of cuteness fool you! She will test you from time to time and if you're not paying attention, she will take charge, so it's important that her forever family sets the boundaries and establishes themselves as head of her pack. Once you have this established it's fairly smooth sailing from there onwards. More than anything she loves to hear 'good girl', so she responds very well to positive reinforcement - learning to wait for her food until everyone has the bowl in front of them, waiting to go through the door until given permission are all things that she picked up in just a few tries. You can see the confusion in her eyes when she doesn't understand what you're asking from her and raising your voice won't help. By encouraging the behavior you want from her and gently, but firmly, letting her know what is not allowed will make her the best behaving dog on the street! She's very cuddly and loves to snuggle with you, sharing a blanket in bed with you is her favorite if you'll allow that! In our house she's not allowed on the bed or on the couch and she's totally ok with that, but she does like to be close to her humans so there's always a dog bed for her in the room. These are rules that we put in place as she's known to take over the bed; this was one of the ways to let her know she's not in charge. Shyanne lives with 2 large male dogs (Weimaraner mix and a greyhound) and a pit-mix female who's about the same size as her, and they are best buddies. It took a while for Shyanne to establish her place in our pack, she didn't feel 100% confident with the big boys and tried challenging them. Our boys, being the confident ones, ended up putting her in her place time after time until she figured out they are pretty cool dogs that she can play with. Due to her breed make up, she will try to herd others. She has lived with a few other families since coming to GALT and she's not compatible with all dogs. She is very playful and enjoys doggie company, preferably at least her size as she likes to play rough, though I think she would be a wonderful only dog in the family. She has so much love for her people that better not share that with others, right?! Also, she seems to be calmer when it's just her; other dogs trigger more energy coming out of her. She's polite with other dogs when outside her home so having playdates with like-minded dogs would be plenty for her. Bottom line, she doesn't need a dog by her side to be a happy content dog. So in a nutshell Shyanne is the perfect companion to someone who wants to find their best friend and one who'll stay loyal to you day in and day out. Having a friend to go out for walks or runs and wherever you'll go with her people will fall in love with her due to the sweet personality she has. She's not for everyone and not necessarily an easy dog, so I wouldn't recommend her to a first-time dog owner. Her forever family needs to establish boundaries in order to have a happy balanced home with her. Shyanne should not live in an apartment nor should she live with cats, small dogs or children. A large backyard to run and play is ideal and maybe even a running companion. Shyanne would likely do well with agility as she is eager to please. She has the biggest smile and is always happy to see you come home! She's very comfortable in her kennel when left alone, and hasn't been destructive in any ways when left roaming free. Are you the family that she's been looking for?! Shyanne's non-refundable adoption fee is $125. She is currently in Texas but can be transported to New Mexico.
