About Merlin

Adoption Fee: $100
Corgi
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Merlin is a fluffy and affectionate neutered male Corgi (7/8 Pembroke, 1/8 Cardigan) with a tail. He'll be 5 years old in May. He would be best as an only dog or in a home with a mellow dog, and no cats. My late wife and I got him at about three months old. We had two Cardigans already, along with a Newfie/Border collie mix. He was a sweet and cuddly boy from the onset, and there's so much to love about him. As a (now) single owner of three corgis, the dynamics are complex, and I just don't have the resources/time/attention to give Merlin what he needs. He has a few trainable 'behavior issues,' such as: resource guarding, leash reactive, rough play with some dogs (depends on the other dog's energy), barky. These should all be correctable with the right owner, who can take the time to work with him. It's taken me a long time to get to the point of deciding to rehome him, though it'll break my heart. What I Love About Him: - He's adorable. - He makes wonderfully silly noises sometimes. - He loves people. - He never gets tired of being petted and scritched. - He's fond of resting his head on feet, arms, etc., in a way that's so endearing. - He's quite capable of playing well with other dogs as long as no one gets too excited. - He loves to run. - He's smart. Why I'm Rehoming Him: - He keeps getting in fights with the other two dogs. The dynamics are complex, and each of them plays a part, but he's usually the trigger. As my oldest dog turns 10, I'm worried she'll get seriously hurt one of these days. But it's also become clear that Merlin needs more than I can give him as one of three dogs. And he deserves to have his best life. Medical Issue: - He has Mega-esophagus, meaning an enlarged esophagus like a pouch that traps food. With medication and a number of special steps around mealtime, it's rarely a problem, and the worst that will happen is he barfs. The medication is just a crushed up tablet mixed into a little gravy or tasty oil so it'll coat his esophagus. Other Notes: - He sheds very little. - Because he's a fluffy, he does need regular brushing and grooming. - He's a hunter by nature, and needs a regular healthy outlet for that (could be as simple as fetch). - He feeds off the energy around him, so keeping his environment calm helps keep him from getting too amped up and turning aggressive. This is why he can live with a mellow dog. - I've worked hard to develop in him a strong, universal association with me and love, and he has responded well to that. Even speaking lovingly to him when he's amped up will help him calm down. Other words, he does best when he is corrected in a calm, loving voice. Not an overbearing or aggressive tone.
