I HAVE NOT MET HIM, BUT HIS ALLERGIES AND DESIRE FOR REAL FOOD ALL CAN BE FIXED EASILY WITH A HIGH QUALITY READ FOOD DIET WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN VETS BILLS AND DANGEROUS DRUGS THAT OFTEN RUIN OUR DOG'S HEALTH. Plainfield, NJ - HADES - 2 YR 4 MO OLD UTD/NEUTERED MALE SAINT - I'm having to make this post again, and unfortunately I've just run out of options. I'm trying to rehome my 2year 4month old Male Saint Bernard Hades. After trying to work with him on training, with the help of my Wife and Psychiatrist I now understand that I just can't complete this mission. We got Hades back in November of 2020 when he was just 6 weeks old. Hades is currently Neutured and is UTD on all of his vaccinations, but also suffers from allergies. As of right now we've narrowed it down to grass outside and chicken, but for more concrete answers an Allergist is needed. He currently takes 2 16mg Apoquel tablets, one in the morning and one before bed. Along with his allergies we clean his ears once a day and do a flush on Saturday. The only other medical issue noted in his Orthopedic report card is a non painful right stifle crepitus. Currently we have our Son (7 years old) and 1 other dog, a 15lb chihuahua/corgi mix and he gets along with both great. Hades has never met a cat so I don't know how he would cohabitate with one, but I do know when it comes to strangers and other dogs Hades has a lot of work needed to make him socially acceptable. When we go for our walks, Hades is 50/50 when it comes to random strangers. What I see is if they look at him and acknowledge him, that's when he'll pull on the leash and bark at them. With strange dogs, regardless as soon as he sees them, he'll pull and bark. This is by far Hades worst issue as this is what triggers my PTSD. Most days I'm able to walk him, he'll have maybe an episode seeing a dog, and by continueing to walk and pull his focus forward, the episode lasts 10-20 seconds. I've worked with trainers in the past and while Hades warms up to people fairly quickly, dogs are another area that will require a lot more attention and training. Other issues that Hades has are typical for his breed. Trash can curiosity and counter surfing. If you leave it for even a second, the moment you leave the room Hades will go for it. We've combatted this by getting a locking trash can and just being mindful of what's on our counters. What could be bad for some is that the only area of the living space that Hades isn't allowed in is my Sons room. Hades typically will sleep wherever it's coldest, but whether it's the floor, bathroom, or our bed, Hades is allowed to sleep there. So depending on the home this may need to be trained out of him. While Hades has a lot of workable areas and a couple of urgent training needs, he's honestly a really good boy. I've had people say to rename him, but I truly see him as myself, someone who's not read past the surface. Hades has the biggest heart full of love to give and he does. He's the first person to greet me or anyone from my family upon coming home and he verifies we're not bringing home contamination via 1,000,000 sniffs. A weird trick that I tought him is to 'kiss kiss' which simply put he'll raise his head and wait for you to plant one on him. He also knows his sit and lay down commands, though he'll try to work a paw shake in there if it means extra treats. Ideally, Hades would go to a family with no other dogs, semi grown kids (16+) and most importantly, someone that has worked with Giant Breeds and either has experience training or has the means to get him professional training. I've tried to get professional training, but money is extremely tight right now and I've even tried to reach out to the VA for help, but because he's not a service dog, there's really nothing they can do in the way of training. I've had some help from nearby sources offering discounts and while much appreciated, I just don't have it. Lastly, I feel as though it should be known that I've been in this position twice before. The first was because of medical bills, which I overcame by selling personal property. At this point in time it's not so much medical as it is my health and my families health. I'm a disabled veteran suffering from some physical ailments, but also struggling with mental health. It's now gotten to the point where I can no longer care for myself, much less giving Hades everything he needs to to succeed in life. I know I've failed him as an Owner, and that's something I'll continue to struggle with, but please put any focus on this post into finding someone or a family that can fully give Hades the training, and attention needed to get him to that perfect family dog status.
