About Max

Adoption Fee: $300
Lab mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

You know how some humans prefer dogs over their fellow humans? Meet Max, a 7-year old, 55-pound male lab/hound mix who prefers humans over his fellow canines! Max is a rock star in the affection department -- he loves humans and makes each person he meets feel special. Max is also an excellent traveler! He drove with his foster mom all the way from Massachusetts to Florida, and back. He enjoyed every minute of the car ride, and hotel stays. Max even sniffed out a litter of kittens under a shed at one of their pit stops! He gave them some loving whimpers and kisses. At their destination site, Max was free to roam the house, and was great with the resident male cat. Speaking of cats, Max's favorite toys are cat toys! Tennis balls don't interest him too much, but his foster mom taught him a game: if he brings the ball back to her he gets kisses! and hugs! and treats! Otherwise, Max enjoys antlers and the occasional bully sticks to chew. Max likes walks, and games of catch, but he does not require lots of exercise. For the most part, Max is an executive couch potato. He developed his napping skills by living with a cat. Max enjoys the company of felines and would enjoy a purring sibling. Max is dog selective and needs to be the only dog in his adoptive home. In foster care, Max has been joining a once a week pack walk with a trainer, Maura Porter of Clear Skies Training, who leads the way. This allows him to keep up with socializing, in a safe, controlled environment. Max is leash, harness, and muzzle trained as he has some fear based reactivity. Due to Max's reactivity, he does require a fenced in yard to enjoy running around freely in. A 'privacy' fence would be best, as seeing thru the rings of a chain link, or the slats of a lower fence can ramp up his anxiety. Max is interested in little humans, but has limited experience with them. He recently showered his foster mom's nieces (4 and 7) with kisses and wags at Christmas, because they were kind and gentle with him. Even so, we recommend he not live with kids under 14 years old. If you love drive-by hugs and enthusiastic head-tilts, any maybe have a feline waiting for a friend, you will adore this loving boy and master snuggler. Please remember! If your family is ready for Max to be their only dog, has older kids, a detached home (ie no apartment buildings) in a quiet neighborhood with a fenced yard, spend some time getting to know Max. Max has been in a foster home waiting for his 'furever' family since September 2021! For the entire 2.5 years in foster, Max has been steadfastly loving, and a wonderful dog. It's time for him to go on his new journey! We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet.
