About Thelma Lou

We love Thel. We adopted her 3 1/2 yrs ago knowing she was food aggressive and does not like sharing her space with cats. (She ignores them outside). Thel tolerates older children but I would not trust her with children under the age of 10 and the child must understand and obey direction. We believe Thel was abused by previous owners and was kicked because she took awhile to trust our feet. We have worked with a behaviorist and she is on anti-anxiety meds. We love her but now that my 4 yr old grandson has moved back to the area, I have to make a choice: my grandson or Thel. What would you do? He is afraid of dogs and Thel feels threatened and confused by him. Because my situation has changed I can no longer work with Thel to give her the home she deserves: one I believe where she would be the only animal and with someone who can continue with behavioral training. She has never bit me but she snaps when she is overstimulated when competing for food or attention. My mother died and we had to take in her dog and while they play together and both sleep in my bed, she will 'go after' the other dog if food or treats are present. Our neighbors bring their dogs over and as long as there is no food present, she is fine. She deserves someone who can focus solely on her. I would like to maintain periodic contact to check on her. This is not an easy choice. She is up to date on all shots, fully house trained and respects a wireless fence very well. She is smart, comes when she is called, sits, stays.
